Professor Garret is one of the best philosophy professors at BU! The class is very interesting and he clearly explains the concepts. Always available outside of class - would strongly recommend going to office hours! Overall - a great professor and very nice person!

As a film major, I have to say Garrett and his taste are incredibly cool. His class is way worth taken than any com's regular film classes. His inspirational and humorous lectures kept/encouraged my film passion/career. (I'm a fan of art films tho) Tips: you need to read some for the essays.

Garrett is a cool guy, but his lectures are not for everyone. Doesn't really seem like an intro class, but instead is targeted for a very niche audience, and the selected films are extremely obscure. Lectures have very little structure and often don't even mention the assigned movies. Grade based mostly on short papers and easy pop quizzes.

This class is not hard but you will NOT only enjoy unless you are a film major or interested in art films. It is a very niche specific class and the professor makes references to obscure movies. The assigned movies are all foreign, long and hard too watch. The professor is really good but if you don't like the subject it will be an annoying class

He's a great guy, with an awesome voice. I only wish he wasn't so bipolar. If you get him in a good mood, everything's great, but if not, watch out.

Professor Garrett is very interesting to listen to and definitely knows about his topics. Make sure to do the readings, as they help a lot with the papers and the final. I didn't do a lot of them until the end and found it difficult to catch up, but possible. Papers are short and not too difficult. Would take this class again, really enjoyed it

Professor Garrett's philosophy and film course taught me never to take a philosophy course again. That being said, I did put very little effort into this course and still got a B+. If you have an interest in philosophy, though, I strongly recommend this course, he's a cool guy and you may find the subjects he covers interesting.

the guy is clearly crazy. he likes this movie that is just a blue screen and 17 hours long. apparently his ta's have both watched it... seriously? he also makes u read emma and compare it to clueless which is a bad combination for any guy that doesn't like chic flicks or jane austen (90% of dudes?)

Professor Garrett is the best professor I've had at BU. He's hilarious, engaging, and very clear about expectations for assignments. I loved his Philosophy and Film course.

Professor Garrett is great and hilarious. He knows nobody is that interested in his strange old Portuguese films, so he is able to poke fun at himself. The class is a bit difficult for someone uninterested in philosophy. Although rough, DO THE READINGS and take notes in lecture. He explains clearly. It'll pay off for the final! Trust me.

Took Modern Philosophy last spring, great class, very deep understanding of not just the philosophies but the philosophers themselves. Excellent discourses on Descartes and Spinoza.

This was his first time teaching this class (Ph&Film), so I'm sure it'll improve, but it was unbearable for someone without any philosophy background. The readings were hard and dry. Thankfully Garrett is very helpful (albeit confusing sometimes) and the assignments were very simple. He also puts all lecture notes online, which helps for the final.

I've learned I hate philosophy. HOWEVER, he makes it much more bearable for those who have to take a philosophy requirement. He's funny and engaging. He posts all of his lectures online. He's laid back, and does his best to make the class encouraging.

I took this class for my humanities credit and wasn't sure if I had picked the right one but I absolutely loved this class. There isn't too much reading but if you miss a few you'll find yourself way behind. We don't read entire books just parts of them. No Exams just 2 papers, one midterm and a final. He made me very interested in philosophy!!!

Great subject and class although the reading is substantial and dry. There are two papers and a take home midterm and then the final. Pay attention to your grade and stay away if you dislike reading lots of material quickly.

Took his class as an honors seminar. He makes class very funny/interesting and has a great sense of humor. Very clear when he makes arguments and very friendly/willing to help you in office hours. However, I think he is a bit harsh in grading the papers -- this class was mostly freshmen who had never taken philosophy before.

Prof. Garrett is SO AMAZING! He really knows his stuff (he went to UCHIC for goodness sake!) and he loves to teach. He gets to know names of people in class even in huge lectures. Plus, he's a fine piece of real estate and easy on the eyes. ;)
