I'm not a History major, but took this class as a GEC requirement. I really enjoyed the lectures, and genuinely looked forward to class. Professor Beyerchen is passionate about what he teaches, and really wants you to understand his class. Would highly recommend!

He is a great professor. Very passionate and interesting. I was rarely bored in this class. Always available to meet and answers emails thoroughly within an hour usually. Definitely not an easy grader though. Reading quizzes are really detailed and papers are graded very hard. Overall great teacher though.

Professor Beyerchen is arrogant and unclear in what he asks. He is available for questions, but his answers are often more ambiguous than the original question you had. I would not take a class with him again. He is very biased towards History majors.

Dr. Beyerchen is quite simply awesome. He clearly loves teaching and cares about his students. His class IS hard, esp. for a 300-level that includes a lot of non-majors. However, he is very willing to help if you take the time to ask. Excellent class.

Beyerchen is wonderful. Demands perfection but awards you for what you can do. Very fair grader. I wrote a paper in an hour and got an 85. Only one of the two papers count. He is very helpful and loves to teach. Made history very interesting, definitely worth taking his course!!

I have taken 4 separate courses under Dr. Beyerchen. Everything from freshman level Western Civ. to European and German history. Every course was thought provoking and educational. His lecture style forces the student to not just learn but to change they way they think about History. He grades fair and does not give busy work, but expect to read !

Smart man. Arrogant. Not a very friendly demeanor. Loves graduate students a lot better than undergraduates. Does have the fire of teaching German history. The part about Clausewitz was interesting. The TA was a little friendlier, but gave me a worse grade than I deserved -- and I am a history major. Bad experience with these two.

One of the best professors I've ever had. Took the course 5 years ago and still remember his teachings. This class was tougher than many classes I took in Honors & Sorbonne; he makes you take an extremely critical look at everything. He forces you to ask questions about why you do or do not do things, which was essential to understanding WWII.

Beyerchen is a nice guy....but his class are NOT fun. Seriously, if you're not a history major, you are definitely overachieving if you take one of his classes. He knows a lot but tends to ramble, clarity goes out the window sometimes, and the lecture at the beginning of his courses is very repetitive.

Alan is such a nice guy and so knowledgable about the subject. You can tell the Holocaust is a huge passion of his and he thoroughly enjoys teaching. There is a lot of reading, but if you put in effort, he is definitely a fair grader, and very helpful!! Would take this teacher again!!

512.04 - Grew up detesting history, because my background in it is embarrassingly nonexistent and it bores the crap out of me. That having been said, this was easily one of the best classes I took at OSU. Spends a lot less time on textbook terminology and a lot more time putting you a century back in time. Lecture actually enjoyable to attend.

I sometimes wonder why people are so obsessed with him. I think his reputation is exaggerated a bit. He's tremendously knowledgeable, but somewhat hard to talk to, especially if you already have different views than he does. He was a good prof though, and I definitely learned as well as enjoyed the class, which are the two most important things.

Above and Beyond the most devoted professor I've ever come across. Makes you work for you grade, but that is how the real world works. If you take one class and do the work he asks of you, you will come back again and again, because professor's that put their students ahead of their research are the rarest thing you can find in a big ten research u

The man definitely knew what he was talking about. The class required some work but didn't kill you. He rambled on a bit but provided you with a vast knowledge of europe in the 1900s and was very insightful.
