Really nice guy but he can talk over you or anyone commenting during critiques. Most of the projects are really fun but they can sometimes be a little much. Make sure you actually show up to class because he marks you down as "here" when you submit whatever work was due that week on his own USB.

This class is really great, as there's new projects every single week as well as in-class critiques for the projects. I find that this is a really nice way to learn, because you're seeing other people's work as well. So far my favourite class!

Comment:

Alter needs to work on being more open about peoples work. I was always lost when he didn't like my work then he liked it when he told me exactly what to do. I feel like this is more of a composition class then a concept class so be open to his ideas too. It will make the class seem less like ideas being forced on you.

The right kind of professor can make a huge difference to a boring course. Unfortunately this man is condescending and not helpful with his suggestions. PS, he loves to interrupt students making comments even when he asks for critiques and his assignments are ludicrous. Oh well, at least the class was a piece of cake. Just make the best of it..

I really dislike the way he generalizes everybody in his class. "You people tend to click the shutter and that's it..." "You people tend to do this, and tend to do that..." I know many people in my class who experiment with their work... very patronizing.

I actually found him quite helpful and giving you ideas and suggestion. Especially when it comes to design - design principle works or doesn't, it's pretty black and white. I prefer him over Wayne's class.

Horrible teacher. He has absolutely no respect for his students. He will not let you do your own ideas for projects, you must do his. He calls this "pushing you". Too bad all of his ideas are awful and cliche. And of course he has to call tech support EVERY class. I want this man fired. A waste of time and money. He's taught me nothing.

once you get to know him, he is inspiring - and to get to know him, sometimes you have to take the initiative. talented artist and designer, knows what he is talking about, doesn't communicate as well as he could. overall, i learned a lot.

I agree with everyones comments for the most part. Good designer, bad teacher. He is quick to assume things about your life/personality, and assumes your design problems are a result of your life experience and personal flaws. He is excelent at making you feel inadequate.

Alex is exceptionally talented and has always demanded from his students what he demands of himself. If you do the work, you will learn alot and the skills you gain will pay-off. He opened my eyes as to how type can work and he will show you more if you ask. Alex's interpersonal skills are pretty rough, he can be painfully shy, but he does care.

So excited about graphic design class until he taught it. i did learn, but not because of him, but just having worked really hard on my assignment. received no teaching and little feedback from Alter. His personal work is very good. He seemed like he wishes he were anywhere that wasn't our class.
