You either "get" Astri, or you don't. I happen to love her courses because you learn SO MUCH. It seems overwhelming at times with her course journal assignments, but if you work on it every other day you will be fine. This course specifically opened my eyes to the amazing world of Bollywood film. I definitely recommend this class!

Pros: loves the material, knows her stuff, enthusiastic, teaches without western bias, generous marker. Cons: inconsistent with time it takes to grade, study guides include several times more information than will be tested, encourages questions but can be publicly condescending in her responses. Would take again - but warily. Loved the class.

Prof Wright is seriously the sweetest lady on the planet! But, her midterm may or may not kill you. It is the only majorly hard assignment in a course that has a lot of films. If you're interested in anthropology this is the class for you. She will make you look at art in a new way (and occasionally holds meditation sessions in class).

Astri's lectures were incredibly difficult to follow, and the content was highly unclear. Did not feel like I took much from the course. She is an easy marker, however, the midterm exam was probably the most unreasonable of any course I have taken. If you take this course very ideal to start the cumulative journal at the beginning

Astri was a wonderful prof- if you show enthusiasm you will be rewarded. Lots of readings and a large amount to study for the midterm but if you are at all interested in the subject matter you'll do well. Astri gives many opportunities to get a good grade so you will if you want one! She's also always available to clarify concepts after class.

Astri is very sweet, but this month long course was extremely dense with readings that were never discussed in class and were the majority of the exam. She wasted class time talking about things that weren't going to be on the exam. Furthermore, we looked at and discussed very little art in her actual classtime.

Expect 25+ emails every day (literally). I expected a class in which the criteria for all the assignments would be clear in relation to the clarity of every film we watched. Unfortunately, Astri lacks structure to what she wants in each of her assignments and it further reflects in asking for help. I would not recommend this class under her dir.

Really nice lady, however terribly unorganized. Syllabus is like a novel in of itself, readings are dated and boring, moved a deadline for huge assignment to a week sooner, sends way too many emails, way too many assignments. Not worth it. Take something else, especially if its an elective.

I took the summer month long course with Astri and it was great. She moved along the course outline without falling behind, got assignments back in good time and showed up to class very enthusiastic. The bulk of the marks were on the two journal assignments so if you like that sort of thing this is the prof for you! I highly recommend her.

One of my favorite professors. Always fun and enthusiastic. I really cannot imagine anyone saying anything negative about such a pleasant person. Certainly has a different teaching style, but if you open your mind you will learn so much.

Just a ridiculous woman, has stupid batwing capes in every colour imaginable. No structure to her teaching, clearly a common complaint as she spent the first lecture on a useless ramble about pedagogy. Her course pack is dense, which would be fine if the readings were academic. Didn't even cover a lot of art.

Energetic, bright and probably always happy; on the other hand, very distracted, lack of skills to organize and deliver principal concepts or ideas related to each lecture; the test is ridiculous since it asks you things that are totally irrelevant to what you've learned; and tones of reading not very related to the tests.

basic structure & large expectations for out of class research. I took all her 200 and 300 courses because they where engaging & the info stuck. But this class has been a disaster. The focus was on Indonesia not Southeast Asia & demanded extracurricular knowledge that wasnt related & outside the department, marked heavy on presentation skills,No UGr

This class was the best I've had all year! Her approach to teaching is more relaxing and unique than any class I've taken over the past three years at Uvic. Her style isn't threatening like other prof's I've taken, who make you stress over everything; she forces you to take a breath and learn to enjoy the simple things in life and learning

Easily one of the top three professors teaching at Uvic. Very relaxing class atmosphere, she takes the stress out of papers and assignments with her calm demeanor and playful approach to the subject material. Very open to new ideas and loves hearing students interpretations on ancient material. Highly recommend!!

I would not suggest this class to anyone. Without a doubt, Astri Wright is the worst teacher I have ever had. If she ever teaches an online class, by all means take it. I learned more from her(MANY) emails than I ever did in her class.

Great professor! HA 337 is a wonderful course. While Astri may be disorganized at times, for me, it was worth it to tolerate it in exchange for her knowledge and passion.
