Though he is retiring, he may come back to teach Great Lives. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It is not an "easy a" and you will regret it. If you are interested in historical figures, just attend the lectures on your own. The tests are full of specific questions and everything is multiple choice. Next to impossible to get an A on them. 1 medium-size paper

Pretty good class. Crawley made it fun to go to class and clearly knew the subject well. Tests were pretty tough, essays were easy to get at least a B on. Definitely going to miss having Crawley here.

I took his Am. Controversies class in Spring 2004. I wish I could have taken it earlier. From his class, I learned library search techniques, how to give a great speech, and how to write a kick ass history teacher. His excitement for history transfers to the whole class. The class was in no way easy, but well worth it. I also have him to thank fo

I love Crawley in a more personal setting but he stinks in this class. You could attend all the lectures and take great notes and still get a C-. The tests are so nitpicky. He has questions on the tinest things like a historical figures favorite drink. I had him in a lecture style class and he was great, but he loses his touch here.

LOVE THIS MAN. Crawley is amazing. I came to this class everyday because he made class so exciting and interesting. He makes every lecture and every part of history interesting. The way he lectures is like a great story teller. He explains things like he was there for each event. Hell, maybe he was. He's like everyones grandpa but he grades hard.

This has probably been my favorite class I've taken at Mary Washington. I took this class as a GenEd and I am still stunned at how interesting Crawley makes the material. Requires studying to do well, but well worth it!

Professor Crawley is the best! He will remind you of the Grandfather that you always wanted! So cute and knowledgeable...difficult to understand sometimes but not that bad. Tests are not tricky but you definately need to review your notes before. Other than reading, there is no homework or papers. The class is enjoyable and a good one to take.

Let's just say I actually didn't mind going to his class. I actually looked forward to it. He is really proud of what he has accomplished and is a little cocky but hey, it's not SOOOO bad like everyone keeps saying. He's pretty funny too. Go ahead and take his class, it won't be that bad...seriously.

great lives series as a class is a joke. He test on the handouts and tests on stupid things like what was the caption of the picture. He says to be sure and read everything carefully but what about the lecturer and his words. some of the speakers were boring. good chance to hear great speakers but not as a graded class. his tests are off the wall

Pompous is right. He likes to test your ability to remeber the mundane and irrelevant. His focus was all off in Great Lives. He likes to talk about the biographer on guest professor more than the "great life" we're supposed to be studying. He wants you to study "academics" not the subject itself. Pointless. Ask him about "crawdaddy".

As an adult student, I could not stomach how pompous and self-absorbed Dr. Crawley was. His office is lined with photos of students that he has taken himself. He and new freshmen and a camera cannot be separated with a crowbar. I think the youth of the students makes them not see what I see: a self-important jerk. Stay away!

Dr. Crawley is a very nice guy. Interesting lectures, and willing to help answer any questions. His tests and papers require some work...but this is COLLEGE people, some work is required, ya know? Overall, a very nice guy and a good professor. I recommend his classes, if you have the chance to take one.

Dr. Crawley is one of few professors who can consistently hold thought-provoking lectures, elicit thoughtful responses, and challenge his students while at the same time remaining entirely humble and approachable. Those who find the tests more challenging than the course seems to be worth have enrolled for the wrong reasons.

I was debating between History and Economics. Professor Crawley's class convinced me the History Department isn't worth doing. Most of the good ratings on here are from people who took him 20 years ago. It would seem he has changed. Tests on useless details. Self-absorbed. I think I'd like to have him as a grampa, not a professor.

I worked my arse off and got a C in his class. He is personable, but I do not like him as a professor. Very focused on unimportant details. This class isn't about "great lives", its about Biographies and how they are written. BORING and HARD. You should avoid Professor Crawdad if you can.

I guess because he has a southern accent people automatically think he's charming. I got news for you people, he's not the darling of the student body. He is not a "tough but fair grader". He is not hard per se, he is obscure. ALL of his questions are about the most obscure things from lecture/reading. He is a terrible instructor.

I had Dr. Crawley back in 1979 and 1980. He was great then, and by the sounds of it from everyone, he is still great!
