Took the online course. To do well I would HIGHLY recommend doing the self check questions because the midterm and final are based off of them. Also, go to her office hours and ask for feedback on your assignments. She's very approachable and willing to help and will help you learn how to bump up your grade. Course material was very interesting

Let me tell you this. I never write reviews but this one deserved one. She is absolutely terrible! I took the abroad program with her and I seriously felt mentally imprisoned. She is not approachable whatsoever. Her office hours were our walking hours. Can you imagine the privacy? She embarrasses students in front of the class for asking the wrongQ

It's an online course so you need to manage everything yourself, especially the due dates for weekly hw. Listen to the lecture notes to get the overall lessons/themes (ex. grey zone). Use the self-test quizzes (not marked, get answers for free) for exams. Gives out possible questions for midterm. For the final quiz the time is REALLY tight.

If grade is important for you, I would not recommend her as she is a tough grader and extremely unfair. To be honest, my worst decision at ubc was taking this course with her.

she is very unclear about her expectations until after the assignments/exams are due, which is too late for you to know what she is looking for in your responses. Please do a favour for yourself and avoid this prof at all costs. I would not recommend her at all.

I don't recommend this professor. If you are interested in Central, Eastern and Northern European studies, there are other great professors- I've taken courses with all of them, and also a couple excellent Sessional instructors as well. I would recommend that you don't take a class with Bozena.

Great instructor - very well read, good humour, always helpful for students who truly want to learn (those who have entitlement issues regarding grades without even trying to think and grow probably left all the negative feedback. Truly not a hard instructor if you genuinely apply yourself). Dr. Karwowska is an instructor for true intellectuals.

Dr. Karwowska is a great professor to be learned from. She respect her students so much and want's all to succeed. The level of the class was so good. You really get into deep thoughts about the subject. The Materials she uses are rare, you would not get to it by yourself. I'm came for only one term at UBC and her class was the best one I took

Loved this professor. I was pleasantly surprised with her ability to create a passionate classroom setting for a topic that was so complex. Really got me interested in the subject. I really respect this professor and so did many of my peers.

I enjoyed this course and I appreciated the effort that Dr. Karwowska put in to make it a positive experience. She marks the midterm hard, but she allows you to make up for it. She can be a bit vague, but she was always willing to clarify if I asked. The course wasn't very demanding and really interesting- I recommend it!

She makes ridiculous mistakes in Russian and should be embarrassed ( But she's not!). She doesn't conceal her dislike of Russia and her culture and people. Bozena is rude, opinionated, and not very smart. To be avoided.

Bozena is amazing! One of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. She really makes you think, and tries to get you to go deeper than just "read this and write that". Class discussion is encouraged. She can be hard to reach via email, just go to her office hours. I'd definitely take this class again!

One of the most opinionated and closed-minded profs at UBC. Any opinions you express in class will be shut down if they are not in line with hers. She refuses to communicate class expectations and exam requirements. There is no clear way to improve, because everything is marked based on her whim and personal opinion. Karwowska is a poor instructor.

I loved this class, but if you're in a position where your GPA hangs in the balance, and you require significant class structure to get an A, you should pass. She'll force you to explore things on your own. Perfect for deeper learning, not so for going in, doing x,y,z assignments, getting out and forgetting everything. Films shown every class.

I just want to commend everyone that was honest here, and gave her an extremely low reveiw. The course was hard to follow, boring and inconsistent. Please dont take this class, it will destroy you, and your semester. STAY AWAY!!!!!

Aside from her heavy accent and soft, slow voice, you never know what is expected. No mark or feedback on responsesessays ever. Midterm marked with just a number, don't know where you went wrong. All "intelligent" questions on subject "cannot be answered" or "no one knows". Any other questions you have is just the opposite of intelligent i guess.

The prof. really knows her subject but encourages students to explore & ask questions as they pursue their studies. I was challenged by the material but also gained hightened expectations of myself as a result of the course and the freedom the prof. gave us to talk to experts on site and challenge what we read with what we hear off the record. A+++
