Absolutely loved Carla! She was extremely engaging in class and always made lots of time to answer questions. She was always respectful of her students and made an effort to teach interesting and practical material. By far my favorite prof at uvic.

Carla's lectures are absolutely delightful. She's one of the funniest teachers I've had and she learned every persons name in my class, even though we had about 130 students! Tough marking but it's not actually her; depending on the genre she has experts in the field do the marker (ie. playwriting marked by an established playwright.

Carla must of been the nerdy kid in high school. she seems to have an attitude about her like a miss know-it-all. dont get me wrong she will help you if you ask but her comments are kind of repetitive and she seems very hard to please. her exam wasnt to difficult though.

her lectures were interesting, and she broadened my perspective on poetry that i would have never considered before this class. i kind of noticed that no matter how hard i tried, my mark never changed....also, she refused to give me a extension of only a couple days after a personal tragedy at home...but other than that, she was ok

Carla seems to be one of those rare instructors who actually enjoys teaching. She comes up with great activities and creates a personal, relaxed atmosphere in class. She's down-to-earth and gives practical advice; that said, she's honest and won't baby your high school poetry.

Carla teaches you that poetry is a lot of work. That said, she also makes her classes a lot of fun, with games and prizes etc. I never once heard her make an arrogant remark; this class has definitely encouraged me to explore poetic form.

It didn't seem like much thought went into the course pack of poems. Criticized anything that didn't fit into her modern poetry box. Told students they were not allowed to write on certain subjects. Made arrogant remarks regarding her publications. She is not respectful to many of her students and can be rude. Get in another section!

She made me feel (perhaps *realze*?) that some people don't belong in the poetry world, and I am one of them. She was funny in class, but never really explained or shared anything about poetry so I had nothing to grasp and use to improve my writing...

This woman is amazing! Prior to this class, I had absolutely no interest in poetry &hadn't written it in over 5 years. Her lectures are interesting. She's not the easiest marker and sometimes the criticism is tough but it's well worth it. My only complaint is I wish we got more of her criticism on our poems and less of the TAs.

Carla is a good teacher, decent poet, and excellent human being. However, she is an extremely poor marker. Her grading practices never begin to approach objectivity. She's rarely is willing to review her TA's performance (which, in this particular section often proved outright careless/negligent). You'll learn lots, but your grades will mystify you

Carla Funk - excellent teacher. Lectures intelligent & thorough. Assignments & constructive criticism excellent. Will workshop first drafts - make an appointment. Love her poetry & all poems in coursepack! Exam is fair - has a clear & helpful 'mock exam'. No surprises or inconsistancies. Very approachable, kind-hearted person. Fair, but work hard!

She has a tendency to pick favourites, and if you're not on that list, expect to get a poor grade. The prof is hard to understand at times when it comes to lectures, when discussing assigments and general improvements as a class. Yet her lectures on poetry is excelent, and her notes on your work are fantastic. She is a hard marker, expect it, use it, and grow from the experience. My interest in creating poems has grown, though my grade haven't.

Carla is completely lovely. She's an excellent poet, and while she is certainly a hard marker, it's not because she wants to see anyone fail, but rather because she wants to see all her students grow as much as they can as writers. She's always interesting, she's always approachable, oh, and did I mention she bakes? Mmm... Cookies...
