Comment:
Barnhart is a funny and intelligent professor, but teaching such a general subject seemed hard for him. He very obviously has specific areas that he cares far more about. It is a very lecture heavy class, and you HAVE TO STUDY. He babbles about a lot of information you do not need and the tests are very difficult. It is passable as long as you try.

Seems like a lot of people on here don't care much for him, but I loved his class. His lecture are very abstract and I didn't use the book at all. He sent out a vocabulary list before each test, and I aced every one just by studying these. He's still talking about mussels but it's fun to listen to him talk

He knows his information, but he doesn't know how to convey that to his students. It's a difficult class, but if you try pretty hard you can scrape by with an A.

He is very intelligent, but does not know how to convey information to students. The tests are mostly over lecture notes. The book was rarely used.

I won't lie, I have somewhat of a brain crush on Dr. Barnhart. I'm not sure why he has so many bad reviews. He is a great teacher, and always presented things in a way that kept me interested.

Painfully boring. He is unorganized and gives very confusing tests. Do yourself a favor and take ANY other bio teacher.

Difficult class. I studied for each test for at least two days straight and still struggled to make a B on each test. He is very intelligent but almost too intelligent. He talks about things very scientifically and makes it difficult to understand especially if you are not a biology major. Pretty dry teacher, difficult class (I took honors section)

He teaches the class very clearly. Attendance is figured into the grade, but isn't worth much. The "textbook" is a typed printout that is purchased at the bookstore. It contains a very precise outline of what's on the tests. If you memorize the anwers, you'll get an A on every test. Recommended

You don't need to read the textbook. I would suggest you come to class because he gives bonus for showing up, but it isn't required to get an A. I started studying a lot for his tests, then dwindled down to the 30mins before and did fine. He goes over material very quickly, but powerpoints are online.

Not a bad class. Not easy but not too hard. I read each chapter once and reviewed each chapter a couple of times before the tests. Also did practice biology mc tests. Got an A+ with no problems.

I took the honors section, and it really wasn't too bad. He posts all the powerpoints online. He gave us bonus points for being there every day. He goes off on tangents often about his mussel research. The tests are all 50 questions multiple choice, somewhat hard though. The final had a ton of bonus and pushed me up to an A.

This class isn't easy. You have to work at it. His lectures are somewhat hard to connect with the material and hard to draw out the main points, but it's not too tough. He's a nice, very knowledgable guy. He really loves bio and some of his personal intersts that he shares are cool. Don't have to read the (huge) book but it helps. You must study.

If you're willing to do a little work you'll learn a ton in his classes. Sure his averages are low, but what he expects isn't unreasonable. Don't take him unless you're ok with putting in effort cause he won't put up with whining for extra credit or curved tests. Overall amazing teacher and all around great guy.

Really enjoyed this class. Dr. Barnhart obviously knows his stuff - and as long as you put forth some effort, you will do fine. Best for people who actually expected to do some work in college.

I am a Biology major and must say that this class is ridiculous. For 99% of the class there is no hope unless you submerse yourself in your book for a few hours a day...which I have done and still have a C. Dr. Barnhart shouldn't be "teaching" a 100 level course. The average on all of his tests are 70's so don't get your hopes up.

Don't take this teacher. I loved biology in high school and I am doing horrible. I studied for a week straight and when I asked him what I could do to improve he said study more!! He doesn't need to teach a 100 level class. He is smart but is a little too smart. He doesn't explain things well and its hard to stay awake and study.

Good teacher a bit monotone(but so am I).Read the book chapters before the lecture and you will be okay he clarifies what you must know through Powerpoint. Most of the failures I sense don't study. Don't take this unless you are a BIO major(I am)He has a website use it. Be Professional its expected.Watch him flex his freshwater mussels.hehe BIO pun

I am a Biology major at MSU. Biology is my life and Dr. Barnhart is the worst teacher I have met. I'm not sure if teacher is the right word considering he just talks for 50 minutes about the general topic of what we're learning about while going through the slides at a pace that you can't write anything down. I am now teaching myself the material.
