Comment:
A lot of these comments about Dr. Gallagher have truth in them, however, if you are pro-active about doing well in his class, you should be able to get a lot out of the class and wind up with a good grade. Talk to him about your work and ask him to look at your film. He is approachable and offers lots of advice. Follow his advice and you'll do well

Learned more from students in the program than from prof. Fun projects but class was a waste of class and no marking scheme is apparent. Prof is very subjective to his marking.

Comment:
Professor Gallagher is by far the worst professor I've personally had. His grading is completely subjective and arbitrary, his tastes are questionable (which leads to unjustified grades for artistic expressions that don't correlate with his palette) and there was little that was taught in class. As an artist, he has merit; as a mentor, he has none.

Seems to assume you can read his mind in terms of how he wants you to do your projects. Also seems like he makes things up as he goes. In one class he never used the textbook, while next year he relied completely on the textbook, and both years I learned nothing. Avoid at all costs.

Tenure has definitely taken its toll on Chris. He does a poor job of instructing. The other comments are true; I learned more from classmates than him. For the 1st of 2 years in a film program, he did not give me personal confidence that I could succeed in the film business. Although he is usually pleasant, he is the WRONG one to teach intro film.

mr. gallagher is an all around nice guy. however, he lacks in every respect as a professor. his grading is subjective, but generally generous. if you want to do film you should take the course but don't expect any insight or inspiration from the prof. a truly horrible prof but nice guy. how is that for a criticism sandwhich.

He could do well to read the comments here. Most I learned from him was a few keyboard commands for Final Cut. Nothing about lighting, scriptwriting, planning, or even basic color correction. Most other students seemed to feel the same. Will answer questions outside of class, but you pay for what gets taught. And that, sadly, is not much at all.

prof doesn't help you much. he never looked at my film until the final screening and never taught us how to use the editing program...i had other members of the class teach me.

Worst professor at UBC...very unhelpful and unclear. Is a disappointment to the film department and barely teaches the basics of making a film yet expects students to produce a top quality short film. Learnt more from other students and textbooks than he would ever teach. Severely lacks skill

A disgrace of a class. What a joke and a waste of money. Might as well just have rented the equipment for all he taught us. Also, made somewhat crass and lewd comments that could easily be taken as racism or as sexual harrassment. Amazed he still has a job.

Inspiring prof, very knowledgeable on the technical side of filmmaking, yet expects students to develop their own creative instincts. Does not really teach - he simply guides you through the process.

This is the worst course I ever took at UBC. He bases almost the whole course on a movie you produce and edit on your own and doesn't lecture you on a damn thing before it. He barely tells you what he'll evaluate your movie on.

This class made me want to eat glass or, better yet, feed it to him. I would rather have just paid the money to use the school's gear and saved my time. I learned more in 1/2 hr from the textbook than from him all semester.

We had to do more learning outside of classtime than we did during the classes. Could be a beneficial course if he taught us what we needed to know about lighting, editing etc. inside classtime instead of asking us to do tutorials outside.
