Comment:
David is an engaging lecturer and enthusiastic professor with an offbeat sense of humour. He demonstrates a mastery of his subject matter. He is generous with his time & cares deeply about his students. His approach is unapologetically critical/Marxist, regularly highlighting the links between politics and aesthetics. Challenging, and worth it.

His personal predispositions heavily influence the course of his lectures particularly as tensions rise between the far left and right. He will derail, & encourage everyone to make art in the political fashion that he sees as necessary. Grades off only a mid term and final. For such a fan of french philosophy he could use some deconstructionism...

Ridiculously difficult teacher. Too much info. on tests in class, which made them tricky. Very disappointed!

Don't be sucked in by the rhetoric it's "a radical class" (Prof. Howard's words). It's a super traditional class which limits you (unless you have a student accommodation) to an in-class midterm and final exam. Yup, decades of literature on learning differences and Prof. Howard is still giving in-class exams. Yikes! Nothing radical here.

He was one of the best profs during my time at NSCAD. I wish I could have taken more classes with him. Never a dull moment in his class. Good sense of humour, and music choices! He really knows his stuff.

The people that have a problem with how David marks, or with David in general should take a moment to reflect on the fact that they are in university. David does not "set the bar to high" he is both fair and accommodating. It is your job as a student to push yourself and grow, intellectually and academically. If you are not up for it, drop out.

David gives some of the best lectures I've ever heard, absolutely amazing. This is the only class I've taken that motivated me to change my art for the modern political landscape and made me considered my place as an artist in the world. Very hard marker and advanced concepts

David tends to be heavily political, but he challenges students to think critically and be socially involved in their work. Outside of that, if you show interest in the work and are open to discussion in the class you will do well. Also don't be afraid to meet with him and talk about your ideas! Great prof, one of the best at NSCAD.

I hardly studied and got amazing grades. Pay close attention in class, take good notes, explain HOW and WHY things came to be as they were and how they relate to contemporary culture. He has enriched my understanding of art history and my own practise.

Narrow-minded and spent too much time completely off topic and applying his own (irrationally AND ironically hypocritical) opinions to the course. Spent each exam review class wasting our time and not reviewing the exam material but rather spending an hour and a half on one or two topics we cannot use. Stick to Jayne Wark for 19th Century.

WIthout a doubt THE BEST prof I have ever had. He is interested, knowledgable and passionate. He is over the top and engaging. I was dreading the course because that art is so "pretty" but I couldn't help but love it. The answer to it all is prostitution! haha...

this one likes to get his students to teach his classed for him. most common d. howard quote: "at the end of the world the only people who will matter are artists and poets". also he is scarily smart, perhaps to the poit that it hiders communication skills.

I was quite shocked @ this prof's arrogance and disturbed by his commitment to convincing students that this culture/time period is "hell" and that it is our responsibility as artists to inform all those people not so blessed and insightful (as artists) as to be able to view themselves and our world with any real level of clarity. disappointed.

Comment:
He wants to be radical, but he is actually very conservative. He is juevenile, like a tenneger impressed with themselves for knowing that the world is not "all as it appears to be". He is too caught up in trying to impress the students and blow their minds that he forgets that as an art history prof
