Comment:
I was no surprised to see good ol' Neil on the list of worst recently professors at UVic recently. I know she's long gone, retired or fired, but I fondly remembered this hack giving new definition to "kicking off her shoes and just wingin' it" in class. After a few years of teaching myself, only now I realize how truly lazy this woman is. Bravo!

Horrible instructor, used words I could not find in the dictionary or in the English Literature Glossary of Terms. Worst teacher in five years at Uvic.

Material and books were great, but her style of teaching and method of marking were not-if you did not agree with her version of reality (which is an entire oddity on its own), you were marked poorly. Avoid at all costs b/c your grades suffer irregardless of effort, intelligence or creativity. APPEA

Harshly critisized, but anyone who kicks off her shoes to teach a class is alright with me. Some people might be turned off by her style, but she ensures participation through classroom discussions that are rarely off-topic. She deserves a better rating.

If tuitions rates are rising, then why is it ok for a prof not to show up for scheduled classes w/o giving notice to her paying students? Why must students lead/teach discussions in class?Probably b/c she can't pronounce words like:"Prrr"

Plagiarised her lectures from Nodelman's text "Pleasures of Children's Literature", had students teach classes through uninspired presentations, could not comprehend higher level thinking and synthesis in student work. AVOID.

pfft, she actually made the students teach the class, she's not a human, she's a bat who lives in her office.

I was so excited for the class. Novels we read were wonderful. BUT she is a horrible instructor. She doesn't actually teach, or know how to lead discussions...Very repetative and boring.

HORRIBLE! likes to pretend she encourages creativity but don't actually try to do something different b/c she won't let you. was looking forward to this class, she KILLED it. so so dissappointed.

Terrible. I found she was definately not open to students' interpretation of material; she is very closed-minded. Class is only somewhat educational, mostly a waste of time. The only upside is she usually lets class out early.

Good book selection, rather simplistic, but enjoyable. She gives you a chance to actually talk and does not put down obscure student ideas. She's kind, and helpful. I find her very enjoyable to have.

Too bad so many first years have to deal with this woman... Anyone with a complex writing style - watch out! She favours simple language and even simpler analysis. To any potential english majors out there, don't worry, it gets better.

This woman drove me insane. We spent most of the semester watching movies based on Mrs. Dalloway and the Great Gatsby, and then didn't have any time to discuss Beloved at the end (or watch the movie). She marked a paper I wrote ridiculously.

class is discussion based- not for shy people! Helpful when approached. Poor lecture style, but she focused on moderating class discussion- which makes things better. More particip.= better class. I'd take her again for 402, but nothing else.

She seems lost and confused. It is unfortunate that she quelched any love for English that I may have held.
