I have had Dr. Tate for a number of classes here at NMU. She definitely knows what she's talking about and is highly qualified to teach anything music related. People don't like her because she doesn't put with with whiners and I wish more professors were like that. She's understanding and will definitely take the time to help you if you ask.

Comment:

Easiest 300 level class at NMU. Also it takes care of 3 of your 8 liberal arts requirements. The professor is easy going and laid back. There are quizzes every week, and a few essays to write but they were very easy. Plus the book for the class was just a collection of native short stories, not an actual textbook so it was actually cool.

Very enthused about music and this class. I took a way a good deal of knowledge on not only Native music but Native culture itself. Great class that knocks out 3 Liberal requirements with one 1 stone.

Refuses to stand up to the whiteboard. Tests take longer than any, if you are a slow test taker you will fail. Tests are unbelievably difficult and she uses the "minus four" nonsense to weed people out (taking off 4% points each single error.. multiple times per question). Does not help. Has no office hours. Talks down to you. Worthless teacher.

How about this woman is a "female dog" (Because i can't use that language here) Her goal in life is to make others lives as miserable as hers was. It is a shame the number of peoples dreams she has ruined. She is not the Department Head anymore, i just wish like Milton from office space the Music Department would "Fix the Glitch."

This Professor my have at one time been great. However the time has come for her to rethink how and why she became a teacher. The whole point i would hope is not to trick the student into being wrong, but to help the student know the right answer. There are better professers to take her place!!!!!

If you aren't a favorite then you will do poorly no mater how hard you try. expectations are vague and changes frequently. Getting help is almost imposible, when you try to get some help she just tells you to drop the course.

The magic class that takes care of three liberal requirements. Very easy, even if you don't have a musical background. Doesn't make you feel like you have to be a musician to do well in the class. Weekly quizzes create tons of extra credit, it would be hard to do bad in the class.

Had her for Theory, lessons, and other randomness. Doesn't speak english, I swear. Accents the wrong syllable in sentences VERY hard to understand. And she isn't a very good flutist, w/ her billy goat vibrato. Outside, class, she's great. IN, no thanks.
