Dr. Gathers is a decent teacher, but he isn't the nicest man around and tends to go on rants in the middle of lectures. There is a LOT of reading (250+ pages per test) and exams are long (100 multiple choice questions), but he grades fairly and doesn't count off for questions missed by more than half the class. Only recommend if no other options.

Class requires a lot of reading. He posts class powerpoint notes on Blackboard. Test length is medium. You have plenty of time to finish the test, which is multiple choice. His grading is very fair-if most of the students miss the same problem, he tosses that question and goes over it again afterward so students learn the material. Good professor!

Dr. Gathers is the best CSCI teacher I've had so far. The test are long and hard, lots of homework. But if you read the book, do the projects, and attend class, you will get at least a C. Thought I was going to fail but did good on the projects and on the final, made a B.

He is really helpful, most of the stuff is common sense if you're any good with computers at all. you have to read and take tests, then you have to go to lab classes on friday, they're really easy, and he will help you if you get stuck.

test are pretty much impossible... about 100 questions over 300 pages of the text (ridiculous).i don't know why so many people gave him good ratings. i don't see how any body could get an A in this class considering the how hard the 3 tests are.

Be willing to read the book. He reads off slides, but the slides do not cover what is on the test. Some of it is on the test, but you want an A you have to read the book and take your own notes. He does not have respect for students

This class is very basic. You need to know how to do everything in this course before you can expect to get any type of job. This should be easy for most people. If not, find someone who is good in this course and have them help you on homework. I made an A, and you should too with his curves.

Ah, old Gathers, bestowing upon us all the fear and respect of the Great Pumpkin. I passed 221 and 222 with As. If you are sure to be diligent in your work, he will recognize that and grade accordingly. I am currently taking 351, which I believe to be a rather crappy class overall, but it's not his fault.

His tests are very hard and he acted like he thought the students were dumb for having questions. One time when I asked a question, he just walked away like it wasn't worth his time! If you can take anyone else for CSCI 201, take them instead. Gathers will just leave you confused in the end.

IF you are computer illeterate...DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The labs are so detailed that you will get lost. You have to know how to apply formulas and "Walking you through" does not happen. Tests are long and difficult. Try a 80-100 question test in a 50min class..impossible.

This guy is extremely easy. He will assign EASY labs and then basically walk you through all of them. Go to class and do the work and you'll get an A. You do need to study a little bit for the tests though.

He has a simple method. Do all your labs (which are easy) and take 3-4 tests. He does seem to be absent-minded but he makes up for it on the curves. Just do all lab assignments and you should pass easily.

One of the best professors I have had at UTM. Very helpful outside of class if you're having trouble understanding the material. He does give lots of assignments, so you will have to work for your grade, but he is very fair. I recommend him for all your Computer Science needs.
