Expect to work hard for a C or better. This prof teaches 3 of the most important geo classes for a career in Geology. Stratsed, soils and GPR and he is constantly taking students into the field for research projects. Read what he tells you to read, pay attention in class, and do your own work. You'll be glad you had him.

Comment:
Dr. Straffin's intro to earth env. was based mainly on his power points which he made available online. There was in class and online work due. The only hard part is checking the online syllabus to ensure it hadn't changed recently. Only reason I didn't get an A is because I failed to check said syllabus after break; missed 4 quizzes. Energetic.

The guy is a good teacher, if youre a geoscience major. Im taking him for a 100 level course and it is way harder than both of my five hundreds. Powerpoints are useless and tests are so hard its obscene. Only take him if you are willing to spend hours with a tutor or are already good with science. Non majors, find another professor.

The WORST professor I have ever had. His notes are not clear, he does not teach you everything you need to know for the test and treats the class like it's an upper level class. Tutors agreed with me when I complained about him. On top of that he assigns a ton of reading and his labs require a lot of unfamiliar technology use.

Good guy, silly, knows his stuff. His tests are not too bad so long as you know your material. The class is a lot of work, but he's fair. Quizzes almost every week, but he tells you what to expect on it. learned a TON in this class. I recommend it!

Powerpoints and notes aren't clear. Gives you the cold shoulder if you don't do well on his tests, which are difficult and worded in a confusing fashion. I wouldn't take another class with him.

GREAT TEACHER! He is very interested in what he teaches, and does a lot of out of the classroom work with it and recommends students to become more involved also. He calls everyone by name and treats us as individuals, and gives an intriguing lecture. His tests are reasonable, and he always invites students to his office if they need help.

Interesting class but crammed with a lot of information to learn in a short time. Very hard tests. Although he gives you a study guide, it basically covers everything in the book, homework and labs. Tests usually cover 4 chapters and are very hard. Way harder than I expected for a gen ed course.

Very passionate about geology. Take good notes, read the textbook, and ask questions. Exams are difficult. Online quizzes, labs, homework all help balance the grading process. Enjoyed this class.

A LOT of information to learn for a Gen Ed course, but this guy is beyond willing to help you out. Gives positive and negative feedback at regular intervals so you can actually learn enough to do well on tests and labs.

This is the hardest class other than Philosophy that I have taken. He has power points. You can buy the older version of the book, READ IT!!. He is a brilliant man, but has a hard time getting the information across. 4 tests, lots of quizzes, lots of labs. STUDY!!!!!!!!
