Class is very easy if you are good at memrozing. Great prep for medical school when taking memorization into account. However, the exams are a complete joke. NOOO brainpower is required to recieve an A. All you have to do is memorize everything!!!!!!! and you will definetly get an A. I would not take this class again though.

Deis is a good guy, super interested in his subject. If you pay attention in class, write what he writes on the board, and study according to the study guides it should be fine.

People writing bad reviews probably didn't open their notes until the day before the exam... Study a few days in advance, make sure you know everything in his notes, and do the practice exams and it isn't hard at all. Go to the lectures because he writes down things that aren't in his powerpoints. You'll learn a lot and super helpful for the MCAT.

Very passionate about biochemistry. Wants his students to learn. Tests are heavy on old test material, use the MC from old tests to study.

In terms of difficulty this class is pretty average. The exam score means are always 75 or above so most people are doing fine. This class is based on 4 exams, final is not cumulative. Lecture isn't mandatory. All you need to find are old exams and learn to memorize every single thing on his powerpoint to do well. He cares about every little detail

Over the summer moves FAST, but if you have really good memorizing skills this class isn't that bad. The 1st exam was the easiest. He makes it very clear in class what he might put on the exam. Memorize what ever he writes on the board, read through his lecture notes/handouts, and do the practice exams. I only used the book ONCE for reference.

He is very smart about the subject, but does not know how to teach. I never struggled in a science class until I took his class. The class is very unorganized, his lectures are horribe, and his tests are VERY specific. I taught myself in this class by reading the textbook. Only textbook I have used/read/bought in college. He does not give a curve.

Granted he is extremely knowledgable and overall a smart person, Deis talks as if everyone is an expert in biochem and it is blasphemous if you aren't. The class was impossibly hard and I went from a 4.0 to not that. Complete memorization in a small amount of time. I strongly suggest that anyone who reads this in the future take 301, save yourself.

He would either explain something or point and say, "memorize this" *change slide*. 407 is so hard that it's offered as a grad class, seriously consider taking 301 instead. But hey, if you think you can overcome useless professors forcing you to memorize enough material to keep you busy for several lifetimes, go ahead and try your luck with 407.

Terrible teacher, very bad teacher, believe me. Does not deserve the "Dr." prefix. Just memorize old exams if you want to pass. But if you want to learn something other than absurd and inconsequential facts, then self-studying is your best option. This class is utterly useless for the MCAT. It's an easy A though, believe me.

I'm only halfway through the summer section but i absolutely love it! Not understandinf where all these orgo comparisons are coming from; if you do the work and put in the effort and study every day, this is a fair class. He's a good professor who teaches the material very well, unlike boikess and roth.

Dr. Deis may come off as annoyed if you ask him for an SPN, but you need to realize there's hundreds of students asking for the same thing and it gets tedious. In lecture he is absolutely hilarious and clarifies exactly what you need to know. I've spoken to him in person and asked him questions and he is very kind and humorous. DO NOT CRAM!

He's extremely corny in lectures and makes eccentric gestures and jokes. His voice is annoying. He also constantly criticizes the material in the textbook, claiming that he's right and the textbook is wrong. Exams are flat out memorization of old exams and things he mentions in lecture. Easy B if you have sharp memorization skills.

Dr. Deis is a boring professor. Extremely dry and just talks for an hour and twenty minutes. However, he clearly outlines what he will stress on the exam during class and on the study guides. Study five days before each exam and GO TO CLASS and you will be fine. Exams are just memorization.

Deis is a bad instructor. Very bad. I mean it's an easy class to get at least a B but you won't really learn actual biochemistry. You'll learn stupid facts like "what can you do to replenish glycogen? eat a big plate of spaghetti." This class is useless for the MCAT. In order to pass, memorize the old exams. He is also very rude in emails.

Without studying for days you are fried bacon with a side of scrambled eggs. Goes off tangent during lectures and writes random things under the projector. Exams are highly specific and cover tons of material. Do not take Biochem with him unless you want to become a breakfast.

Never got a low grade in any science course. Well, I guess Deis's class isn't really a science course. It should be changed to Society 101. If you are premed, you will regret taking this course this semester since Biochem is supposed to be one of the most important classes before medical school. Take this course during the summer.

Deis does not know how to properly teach Biochem. He spends most of the time drawing random structures on the projector. Each lecture is over 100 slides. Since we are behind Deis is cramming 9 chapters worth of material into the final which will be difficult. Even Systems Physiology with Golfetti is better and easier than this class.

Exams are tricky and cover 9 chapters filled with Orgo concepts. You have to be careful when studying since there is no curve. One poor grade on an exam equals a poor grade in this class. Due to this difficulty there should be a 10-15 point curve. Take 407 instead which has 4 chapter exams and a big curve.

Comment:
This class gets progressively more difficult as time passes with exam questions becoming more specific like drawing every step in pathways. You have to be proficient in Orgo in order to do well in this class since many concepts build upon Orgo 2. Also no curve in this class so whatever score you receive on the exams becomes your final grade.
