Carey is such a genius. I learned so, so much in this class. Lectures can be boring at times, but the material is so interesting it is usually okay. I would highly recommend. Definitely my favorite class this semester.

Comment:

EXTREMELY knowledgeable. I really liked his class, lectures can be boring at times but he does tell jokes and stories to make them relatable. The TA graded part of the exam but he was VERY fair . There is only a midterm (with a recovery if you do badly) and a final but it's not too hard. You can get by with good notes if you don't do the reading.

This guy is a freaking genius. If you like American history and political science and philosophy, take this class! He's so knowledgeable and you'll learn a lot. Unfortunately, your entire grade is based on a midterm and a final (and an optional midterm). So if you want to get an A, you must do all the reading AND take good notes in class.

Prof Carey is really knowledgable and the man is a legend, which makes him worth taking right there. Workload is pretty light--minimal reading for a govt class, no papers, one midterm and one final (unless you mess up on the first exam-then you can take a makeup one). Really helps you understand US government as it's supposed to be, not how it is.

Took Am. Poli. Theory for a government requirement. Class was marginally interesting to me, as I have no pronounced interest in government; Carey obviously knows his stuff, though. Go to class, take explicit notes, and memorize them for exams! His midterm was easier than the final, in my opinion-he went into much more detail on the final. Got a B+.

Comment:

Professor Carey and Father Schall were the two best teachers I had at Georgetown. I learned the most from them. They provided great insight into politics and philosophy and why America and the world are the way they are. They make you think and discuss ideas and theory in the manner in which a liberal arts education was intented to work.

Carey is a funny old guy, and I enjoyed all his classes, but they vary in quality. I esp. recommend Conservatism and the democracy seminar. If you're a lib. and you want to have your thoughts challenged, this is the best way to do it. Very fair grader, great sense of humor.
