I really had a hard time with this class simply because it was ALL ESSAY FORMATTING! 20 questions min one page answers about the HISTORY OF BIOLOGY! If you have the time to study the material it will be an easy grade, BUT make sure you understand everything completely when answering ?s on exam. He's a great teacher, but I felt that he graded harsh

Just an absolute jerk. I aced his class but because I had to study on my own. When I applied to grad school I asked him for a good recommendation, his answer was of course. I saw it after I was accepted. It was short and to the point. "I do not know (him) very well so I cannot write him a good recommendation." What goes around comes around. Idiot!

Comment:

Garbutt is a good teacher who has the students best interest in mind. The stuff he is teaching is a bit complicated, but as long as you pay attention it's very managable. I literally skipped three straight weeks at the end of the semester and still got a solid B. I think the problem is kids are taking on more than they can handle, and not studying.

Garbutt can be rude and vague when teaching, especially if you are in his honors biology lab. Luckily, my TA was friendly and made up for his difficulties. His genetics material is challenging, but if you read the chapters and go to his lectures, it's easier to keep up with the material.

Garbutt's material was hard if you didnt have a basic understanding of genetics. I would recommend going to class, because his extra credit points add up. You have to study hard for his exams - they include info from both the lectures and the book. He is a good teacher, but the material is difficult if you do not already understand it.

Completely worthless. He's a good guy, but when it comes to helping out students, he talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. Tests were ridiculous and his lectures were boring. An even worse advisor though...

His class is not easy, but he makes it really interesting and (I hate to say it) fun. You need to study pretty hard, but he is a clear, good teacher that is always willing to help. I never thought that I'd have a teacher make me laugh and still learn something at the same time. Still, I appriciate all the extra credit he gave.

Garbutt tried too hard to be cool. His class was by far the most interesting. His tests were hard, and I learned from the book more than from him, but you have to study his notes if you want to do well on the tests, not just read the book. Does give extra credit though.

Hands down Garbutt has been the best professor I've had at the university, he's really interested in getting students excited about biology and makes the concepts easy to learn and easy to remember, I wish I could have him for all of my biology classes!

Well, class wasn't as boring with Garbutt, but his tendency to rant on and on about things other than Biology tends to make you a one-day lecture last for a week. I thought he was the least effective teacher of the three, and I would be more prone to skip his lecture.

By FAR the best of the three. Garbutt added humor to the lecture, and his demonstrations with props, etc. were helpful. Be prepared for a tough test, but if you print the notes off the internet and add extra stuff during class, you'll be OK. The accent is cool too.
