much as others have said: he's very good, he also swooped into my life--but ten years ago & did much the same as he did for the writer below. he's old so he's a little out of touch--but he's very smart & he wants you to get better. & he tells it like it is. & some people don't like that.

Out of all the professors he is the only reason I stayed where all the rest fed you lies that your poetry was good this guy tells you how it is and THAT IS HOW IT IS IN THE REAL WORLD!!! Loved the fact that he wasn't an ass kisser like the rest. And what he taught was constructive to my writing because we all have tradition in what we write.

he teaches in a specific tradition, as he was taught by phil levine. he won't coddle you and tell you your crappy poetry is wonderful. he'll be honest. don't try to sound poetic. be real so you won't trivialize your experience.

he definitely loves the traditional white man's poetry canon. he loves metered, structured poetry, and that's what he teaches, which i found very helpful. he's pretty funny, too, if you don't mind listening to war and football and levine stories.
