Dr. Herren has a wealth of knowledge on all things English, Literature and the Arts. A lover of music and pop-culture, he enjoys talking about the 70s and 80s as much as he does Oscar Wilde. Pop quizzes are part of the syllabus, as is participation. Highly recommend you prepare for both.

One of the best Professors i have ever had, really cares about you and is willing to take his time to help you. he calls on people in class and cares about participation. if it looks like you don't care he will not like you that much, so just put in the work and you will do well

This class was super easy, and the test are fine as long as you know the story(which is easy). Hardest thing is that he grades the papers hard, but you can get a C on the papers and still have an A in the class. (DO NOT BUY THE BOOK, if your trying to save money I would recommend not buying the book. I found every short story online except like 3)

Awesome professor. Pretty down to earth about expectations, and if you work hard, you'll be rewarded. Very clear about the material and classes revolve around discussion. Tests are pretty easy, but he grades papers more difficultly.

herren is the greatest professor i have ever taken at xavier or anywhere. he is truly one of a kind, i've never met a teacher so passionate. i would take any class he teaches, and plan to. if you haven't had him yet, you are missing out! it's the only class i actually looked forward to attending. no tests just a few manageable papers.

Possibly the best teacher at this university. Extremely helpful and makes class interesting. This class made my day every day, and I still learned a lot. Graley treats every student with respect and is absolutely great to get along with. PLEASE take him, and enjoy! :)

Just discuss the reading, which is usually interesting and quite light and easy for a lit class, all period. Plenty of essay topics to choose from for the 3 5-page papers and given well ahead of time. Research paper only 10 pages. Just write smoothly and clearly while working closely with the text and you'll be fine. For a professor, he is funny.

What's not to love? He respects opposing interpretations, listens to the students, chooses interesting works, gives easy quizzes (and ample extra credit ops), gets your work back to you quickly and with plenty of comments. I never went to his office but he always seemed available for help. Why stress over English? There's Herren.

Coolest professor ever. I am not an English person and only took the class the meet core requirements. Despite the fact that i usually hate english class, this was one of my favorite classes. He make class really interesting. If you do the readings and go to class you should do fine in the class.

This is a really good teacher. One of my best english teachers ever. Hes really nice and willing to help. He doesnt grade to harshly and the quizes in class are like: Whats the main characters name? (Very Easy if you read) His midterm wasn't that hard either but you do have to study or at least look over the readings. Take him if you can!

Not only is he a great teacher, but he is also and amazing scholar!If you want to be a favorite then you'll need to do your work and participate in class, but I think that's just called being a good student. This is grad work so you can only blame yourself if you don't like the class. Oh and just about everyone I know, whether they male or female, finds him pretty attractive. Which is always a bonus.
