Did not post one grade all semester. Had us buy a $100+ loose leaf textbook and we used it less than 10 times. Material that was taught is class was not on exams and teacher was poor at timely grading and not losing assignments.

Great material, great grasp on the material, and very helpful. However, she speaks so quickly, even I who am mostly fluent in French cant copy notes down as fast as she goes through them, and, she stands in front of the board so you cant see what shes presenting.

Learned a lot during French 101 (writing). Professor VanSlyke provides excellent feedback and corrections both in class, and on the half-dozen writing assignments. Course provided a good combination of literature and grammar. Would strongly recommend this professor IF you are willing to work hard.

She is one of my favorite professors of all time. She is extremely kind, intelligent, and humble. She's always willing to help and she responds to emails pretty much immediately, regardless of when they're sent. My french has drastically improved through the classes I've taken with her. Honestly, she's just amazing.

Van Slyke is like an adorable, intellectual grandmother. Her French is very clear, and she will go over a concept until it's fully understood. She's very accessible outside of class, too. Only complaint: took half the semester to "diagnose our grammatical problems." Then we only covered those biggest problems. Would have liked to cover more.

Van Slyke is a kind and very well-organized prof. She is a ton of fun, and the work load is very reasonable. This is my third course with her, and she is by far best teaching grammar and writing. Very personable, I highly recommend 201 or 209!

Greta professor. Do the reading, ON TIME, participate in class, and you'll be fine. Very helpful. Sometimes assignments can be vague, but ask her at office hours and she'll help you develop ideas. Tough grader, but very fair.

Class isn't particularly easy or interesting unless you like that stuff. But she structures the class really well with a lot of group work which helps to understand everything since there is so much to remember. She's very helpful, grades kinda tough, but is willing to help.
