Professor Jaffe was one of my favorite professors I have taken for upper division English. He's not too tough, he just wants you to participate and make an effort in the class. His readings are unique; the movies are surreal and intriguing. He is really inspirational and I highly recommend him. Just make sure you do your work and attend class.

Jaffe is a compelling professor who wants students to think critically and with a social conscience. Very open and very passionate. I don't understand all the antagonism toward him. If anything, he is so good at what he does that so many of the laughable students in his classes hardly deserve his attention.

I loved Hal's workshops. His critiques are thoughtful and outside the box. He can be moody and dramatic but what writer isn't? I've never had a teacher so invested. He's the reason I'm being published today. At a time when I couldn't get even get an audience with her highness Alcosser, Hal helped me with everything at SDSU.

A joke of a professor, much like the entire MFA program at San Diego State is itself. If you must attend school here, do not take his workshops.

I can see myself liking this dude and his class if I were a starry-eyed undergrad who is still impressed with this kind of "edgy" charlatan, but as an MFA who is seriously interested in writing, his class was absolutely useless. We just drifted for a semester, listening to him talk for 90% of workshop time. Nice guy but not a good class.

The negative comments about his writing spurred me to respond here, who cares what kind of a writer he is? My writing was not his stylistic cup of tea but he gave me constructive and useful feedback on everything I turned in and was very supportive. His workshops were interesting as well. Negative comments here seem insecure vs. helpful.

Prof Jaffe's class is a real eye opener. if you are dull or middle of the road you won't enjoy. But if you have a thinking, functional brain and are open to expanding it, you will thrive here. Very innovative and useful to my writing.

He considers himself a genius because he writes "metatextual" stories. Metatext: take 300 index cards, write a different word on each card, toss stack cards in the air, pick up cards in random order, write "story" by typing in words as you flip through the cards. If you do this, you're a genius and he praises you. If not, you have no talent.

Publishes myriad tiny little "novels" via even tinier publishers; if it wasn't for the charity of the State, this joker wouldn't be able to survive. How did he get a tenured job at SDSU? My guess is : PC to a fault (gotta keep that river of federal money flowing).

Jaffe fancies himself this post-modern genius, but is a two-bit hack with purient sexual fantasies he thinks are unique but are as tired as his teaching style. He will pigeon-hole you based on your first writing--so don't write a gay/race/gender based story unless you want to be THE whatever representative for the next 15 weeks. Avoid him.

I can't imagine a teacher who could be more lame. I really looked forward to the class, only to see the reality of his incompetency as a teacher. He is the worst teacher I had at any level in college (and I have a Master's degree and a Ph.D.) He is ridiculous and should not be teaching. His attitude sucks. He needs to go.

I don't understand how such a weak writer can be an English professor but I guess the standards at SDSU are non-existent. If you act like you agree with his extreme luddite/leftist politics you'll get a good grade. However, he is very disrespectful to students and doesn't reply to student emails. He has lost his drive to teach, if he ever had one.

This is my second time taking his class and second time earning an A! He is probably one of my favorite professors at SDSU. He has interesting class discussions while open to all opinions. His grading is brillant. If your writing improves, you recieve the grade of your best paper at the end of the semester! Everyone should take ONE class w/ Jaffe!

He can be likeable, but then again his mood determines how nice/nasty he'll be. If you say anything that doesn't jibe with him, he turns into a 10 year old child and refuses to respond to simple emailed questions thereafter. He often ends up ignoring those he initially favored as if he suddenly decided they're not worthy of his attention.
