Laycock, though somewhat unstructured in his lectures, is exceptionally intelligent and helpful. Avoiding hum because he may be unclear, though not untrue, is a huge mistake.

Comment:
He is very passionate about the course subject, knows his stuff and if fascinating and enjoyable just to listen to. However, his lectures are kind of disorganized and hard to keep track of; he kind of rambles. I learned a lot from his course, but had to take a lot of initiative myself to get good marks and good understanding of the material.

Comment:
Laycock is passionate. If you are a heavy thinker you will love this class and learn a lot about yourself. If you are not inclined to analytic and abstract thought, you are wasting your time. Fun fact about Laycock: he rides his bike (even in the dead of winter) and comes to class with one pant leg tucked in. Total G for Grandpa.

He is a very engaging prof. People who think he rushes through difficult ideas just haven't done the readings. His office hours are very useful. If you can take a class with him, you should!

Knowledgeable, has genuine interest in the subject, great at taking apart arguments (philosophers and students alike), and witty. Tends to rush through more complex ideas, but tries to also clarify things near the end. TA (Octavian Busuioc) was especially helpful and engaging.

I had him as an instructor back in 1999 for the first philosophy course I ever took. He was very good, and so was his TA Jane Forsey. Too bad we didn't have any lectures with him in the second semester, though.

My memories of this class involve a) doing the readings and being confused, b) attending class and becoming even more confused, then c) receiving clarification from my amazing TA, Matt Lawson, who can make even the most obscure philosophy comprehensible.

Disorganized, but great. Hard to understand if you didn't do the readings.. wait, IMPOSSIBLE to understand if you didn't to the readings. If he seems crazy it's because it's really your own damn fault for not doing the work you were suppose to. Do your work and you'll realize he's brilliant.

This guy has no idea whats going on. SOOOO disorganized, completely all over the place and seems to have absolutely no concern for students what so ever. His lectures are so brutal... truly old fashioned guy who needs to get his head out of his rear and realize how to teach
