I started this course thinking that I wanted to major in Physics. After this course, I don't know if I ever want to do physics again. He is unorganized, assigns massive amounts of work that are of no use to you because he never returns, and even with the textbook there was very little structure and direction to the course.

Comment:

Herb completely changed my academic career, and entirely for the better. He's extremely passionate about helping students actually learn the material he teaches, along with the various quirky life lessons he builds in, and is always available and willing to lend help if needed. The material can be tough, but it's worth it. I recommend!

Great Guy, Super supportive. Nerdy, in a sweet way. Super moral guy, with a deep feeling for spirituality as a guide to the kind of science people should be doing. Also, a world-class physicist doing original work with top people. So if you want to learn about being a scientist, Herb is a great guy to work with.

This class changed how I look at education. Herb is so passionate but the problem with this is sometimes he gets a bit jumbled and ends up assigning massive amounts of work. Always willing to help or teach. Super unorganized, don't expect assignments back.

Pros: fun/funny. Helpful, even with non-physics stuff. Teaches a hard course--don't take it if you can't do math/don't really want to be there. Cons: teaches strictly from a friend's notes--they're good notes, but it's a little annoying. Never gives work back, even though we do a ton. Tends to teach to the lowest common denominator.

Herb is an excellent professor; very confusing, but his patience is endless. He works with students who work with him and not with those who don't. He teaches to something deeper than the raw material, so don't take a course with him if you need it for a test.

Herb rocked my Div III world. When I wanted to do a project outside the bounds of what anyone else would work with me on - not even vaguely NS related - he agreed to chair my committee. He's a great resource to work with on outside-the-box projects. A gem.

In my experience Herb is extremely willing to help students who are in need of help, you just have to make the commitment to stay after class or go in during office hours. Although Physics with Herb is a challenge it is an experience well worth the extra work!
