Pros: Open book exams, free attendance and hw points, tries to clear up confusion(successfully sometimes). Don't think he does not notice you. He cares in a very subtle way, like parents who love their kids but don't tell them. Cons: Long lectures, yet you have to learn everything on your own. Textbook sucks.

Like the rest of the Math department this guy doesn't really teach you anything. Get ready to learn Stats all by yourself, because that's what you are paying for right?

AWFUL, AWFUL professor!!!! He's unclear, does not explain what he's doing, and test questions are ridiculously hard. DO NOT take stats with this man if you can avoid it, it'll save you a semester of pain and torture.

Hsieh is a pretty funny professor. He's old so he likes to tell stories about his life from time to time. As for his teaching, a lot of people that complain are probably the ones that don't come to class. The textbook definitely helps though.

WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. Nice guy, but WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Doesn't clear up points of confusion at all and is hard to understand and follow. Barely does any examples. Exams were open book/open note and the class average was still about a 68. Even my math adviser told me to AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.

UNLESS YOU NEED THIS CLASS FOR YOUR MAJOR, AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!!!! I took it thinking it would be easier than calc (since I took AP stats in high school), but I was 100% wrong. Hsieh is a very nice guy and he can be funny at times. But he's not clear at all. Take class with Hsieh b/c he gives bonus points for attendance and tests are open notes.

I could not say enough bad things about prof hsieh. I am now two classes past 515 and it has taken me this long to recover from what I missed due to Hsieh's horrible teaching. I've made comments to other professors and they know how bad he is too. All I can say is read the book

If you actually have a solid background in Math (esp take Math 233), then you should be able to follow him. People complain but if you actually listen you will understand. He gives out free extra credit points and solutions to hmwrk before it's due. Exams are actually not too bad. He is also funny from time to time.

He's not *that* incomprehensible. The man taught Stat140 for a reason, he's terrible at explaining abstract ideas. Tons of unnecessary calc, random tangents of silly stats proofs, not a practical application I see at all from this class, the book teaches me more about stats then him. He loosely follows the book; pointless class. Disappointed mostly

Prof Hsieh is so horrible that I wrote a detailed complaint to the math department. He does not structure his lectures just starts writing on the board. tests are open notes so if you want to pass you should read the book thoroughly and take extensive notes. the class is not helpful to go to I just go for extra credit points.READ THE BOOK

You can't understand him at all and he does not assign homework promptly. However, his tests are easy compared to the material and this semester, he gave us a stamp for every day we attended class, and each stamp was a bonus point on the test. Also, homework solutions are posted online but it's very easy to copy the solutions without trying.

It infuriates me that UMass allows people like this to teach. His course had absolutely zero structure or organization. It would take him up to a week to respond to emails... if he answered at all. Statistics is a fairly interesting topic, but he made it unbearable.

H.K. is the man. I honestly don't get all the bad reviews. Class was a walk in the park, gave extra credit, went over the assignments every time, and there were take-home exams. Plus, his jokes made no sense and were hilarious! If you wanted to zone out, you could, and still do well. He's very smart and a good resource if you go to office hours.

Prof. Hsieh obviously knows a lot but he does not explain things clearly at all. I have no idea how calculates grades since after doing well on the two exams and homeworks, I ended up with a grade much much lower than what I expected. Lots of bonus points, but you dont learn much about stats other than how to copy from your notes/book.

This guys is like a double edged sword, he dont explain much and his test's are pretty hard, but he gives tons of extra credit and scales, if you go to class do all your homework and study hard you'll be fine. Hes a pretty good guy imo

easily the worst professor I have had in my life. I think the subject material is fascinating, but I did not learn a thing from going to lectures. Would have been better off to skip class and read the book. A fairly large amount of material on the final was unrelated to anything covered on the homework assignments and previous tests.

He's really not that bad. If you are ok at math, just go to lecture, do your HW you'll do fine. He's tough to understand but his quizes and tests are easy enough. If math's tough for you maybe you should take it with a different prof. He's entertaining, he'll give you extra credit if you go to lecture and answer all your questions on HW if you ask.

One of the most ridiculously unclear teachers I've ever had. I went to every lecture and up until a week before the final I had no clue at all what had gone on the entire semester. First test = easy. Everything after that was just beyond comprehension. Hes funny, and gives tons of extra credit just for going to class. But I have no clue how I passed.
