This was one of the most difficult classes I've taken at UVM. BEWARE that this is basically a methods course within medical anthropology. If you're wanting to get an introduction to medical anthropology (like I was) this course is not for you. Jeanne is really nice and honestly a good person but her course and her rubrics are borderline psychotic.

She took a class that sounds super interesting, and made it kind of bland. There are a lot of readings, They are pretty hard to follow if your not interested. Not a fan, and she is kind of hard to talk to, a little intimidating.

The woman seems nice enough, but she stood there like a robotic deer caught in the headlights. Some lectures were interesting, but she needs to liven up to actually engage the class instead of just standing in one spot the entire time. Go to class and DO THE READINGS; it's the only way to pass. And before the exam, reading the slides is a MUST.

Worst teacher I've had so far. I'm sure she's a nice person, but her lectures are extremely unclear and I never understood what she was explaining. Read the book, glean what you can, and you can get a B. I'm a good student who was interested in anthropology, but I couldn't stand her.

She's quite a strange person, but she's clearly passionate about her subject. Attendance is 20% of the grade which to me is a little ridiculous. The exams are very easy as long as you read the powerpoints and go to class. The final project is an essay that is about applied anthropology and I absolutely hate it.

Interesting & challenging class. Jeanne is friendly & eager to help. Knowledgable & experienced but, can be disorganized/flaky. No graded work was returned until after the withdrawal period. Expectations were unclear at times due to contradictory info. To her credit this may be attributed to her year researching abroad just before the semester.

Dr. Shea is the Batman to my Robin. She gives clear (if stringent) guidelines about expectations and her feedback on assignments was extremely detailed. Very willing to work with you if you put in the effort - I spent HOURS in this woman's office. She kicked my ass but I'm a much better student for it.

Do not take anthropology with this teacher. Her tests require a lot of work and 3 exams is your only grade. Attendance is mandatory for it also counts as part of your grade. Class is extremely hard to sit through and she never blinks. Only talks about China.

Literally cannot stress enough, do not take this class. I am an anthro major and she made me hate cultural anthro. Only three exams and attendance makes up your entire grade. She doesn't know anything about technology and the only examples she ever used in class is China. If you take this class, just make sure it's not with her.

Weird. Just very weird. There is only 3 exams all semester that make up your entire grade. Those exams require a hell of a lot of studying. I'd recommend looking for another professor though she is not the absolute WORST I've ever had.

We had one assignment during the entire first half of the semester and it took FIVE WEEKS to recieve a grade. Syllabus, expectations and guidelines are scattered throughout bb and written as if she was just rambling off the top of her head. Often goes on GRAPHIC tangents about the complications of childbirth, whether or not related to class.

Shea is nice and her class is pretty easy, but it's also rather boring. She is a bit high strung and sticks to her own specific format, she's not really open to creativity. She also has a strange obsession with China/Asia, it was more of an Asian Studies class than Cultural Anthro.

This teacher is completely useless... I could really learn much more if I spent the time in her class reading the book. Keeps entire class for an hour even though her test only took the entire class 20 min. She'll make you sit doing nothing for 10 minutes after each class to give people a chance to ask questions even though no one ever has any.BAD

SO BORING. Shea is incapable of using a microphone properly so you have to listen to her ramble about her own experience with constant feedback. It literally takes all of my energy to not throw my pen at her head. If you are taking human cultures, Shea is not a good choice.

Interesting topic, lectures could be a bit dull sometimes but good discussions. The entire course was just readings (which you can get away without doing) and discussing the topics in class. Instead of exams, there was just one 8-9 page research paper that we worked on all semester with progress evaluations once in a while. Overall, pretty easy.

Medical Anthropology (Culture Health and Healing). She is a great teacher. If you do not like the subject then it might be 'boring.' BUT if you like the topic then she is an amazing teacher. She's a very fair grader and cares A LOT about you doing well and understanding the information. Anthro majors should take her!

I highly recommend that you do not take her class. Yes, she seemed to know a lot about anthro, yet she didn't effectively share much of that in class. Her lectures were not interesting at all, more like rants (and they were on a very small amount of info). But can still get an A even if you can sleep through her classes and never do the readings.
