class is dumb. you can skip every other monday (you have a quiz every other monday-they are easy to cheat on, just pull up the powerpoint before you take it. he doesnt know/care) wednesdays you do a project which is pretty easy and he is willing to help if you need it. fridays he doesnt even want you to go to class, so i recommend him!

Avoid Frens for FIT if possible. He is unhelpful in class, and his quizzes are way too hard. It's a 1 credit computer class and he treats it like it's something serious that people might care about. He also does not manage class time well and does not help people out with questions.

DROP HIS CLASS. He isn't even a real prof. Somehow he takes what should be the easiest class at Calvin and makes it hard to get an A in fact I probably have a C right now. We had a quiz over a bunch of stuff we had never talked about. Wait till you can get an easy prof.

Avoid Frens if at all possible!! There's a reason why only half the class shows up on any given day. If his lectures with replaced some text-to-speech software that just read the PowerPoint slides, I'd learn just as much. I feel as though I could learn Java a lot better simply by reading tutorials online than by attending class. Don't take Frens.

He was very boring in class and few people seemed to learn from him. Less than half our class showed up for lecture, as everything you learned came in lab. He does have a pretty easy grading system which makes up a little for the fact that you learn little in the class.

I usually left class wondering why I didn't skip. The only way I learned the material for the course was by reading the book; the lectures were mostly useless. Plus, Frens' incredible disorganization (and, frankly, his laziness) made the class a bad experience for me. One positive: Frens is helpful if you come into his office to talk with him.

Frens is a nice guy and helpful out of class. However, he is totally disorganized. You rarely receive assignments back. Also, lectures and lab manuals are convoluted. Unless you have previous programming experience, AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.

My biggest problem with Frens is that he just wasn't very organized. Lectures rarely helped understanding of the material, labs and projects were occasionally frustrating to read through, and we never really knew how we were doing in the class. However, Frens is very helpful if you need additional assistance, so take advantage of it.

He really knows Java well; however, he did a poor job helping others learn Java. His lectures are very unclear and poorly prepared. He doesn't communicate well. Also, I found his labs and assignments frusteratingly disorganized. Avoid Frens, if possible.

ughhhh almost everyone in the backrow of my class were asleep half the time. although he will help you outside of class and through emails, his lectures are so hard to understand in class. i think i only knew of two students in my class who were actually computer science majors....what a boring! class

DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! STAY AWAY! Lectures are boring and have nothing to do with the labs & projects that are assigned EVERY week and take 2-3 h EACH to complete. One of the hardest and most time consuming classes @ Calvin. Quizzes are 40% of your grade and he asks questions about movies in class on there. Prof hard to contact-doesnt answer emails.

i can honestly say that the lectures were completely pointless - i learned nothing from them. i learned everything from the labs, where he doesn't even teach. he is good at teaching one on one when you have a specific problem. if you want to do well, go meet him one on one a lot, or you'll be lost.

He's pretty good at computer science; however, he has no idea how to make others good at it. His lectures were, in general, really hard to follow and not very clear or helpful. At least, he's willing to meet with students outside of class to help them. But class and labs are a waste of time.

Friendly guy, sucky prof. I don't understand what the purpose of class was. After the semester was over I got a report saying that no homework actually got in there. Came to class the last 2 week hoping I'd get to fail him on the teacher evaluation he never passed out. DON'T GET HIM!

Will help you for any problem. I stopped reading the book after a couple weeks. I always felt like falling asleep in class, but the labs helped a lot to understand. But they always took way to long. Grading was sketchy (got an A with a horrendous final).
