Comment:
Without a doubt, John Bell is the smartest and most accredited person I have ever taken a class from. His method of teaching is quite all over the place and unorganized, but with a course being so abstract like this it really is difficult to teach. The feeling of being taught by such a genius and legendary person is so phenomenal.

Bell is a genius. Yes, he lectures over your head, yes he often skips half the proof, noting that "it is done in the usual manner" or is "trivial," and it is, well for him; but when in your life will you get to be in a class with such a person. A classic genius. I guarantee that you will not forget it.

Comment:
Does not make sufficient effort to explain the material; instead, rushes through examples as though it will automatically enforce understanding. Does not pause for questions or to check if the class is following. Wrote the text himself, using systems of his own invention; so supplementary sources are out of the question. Seemed fair with tests.

Difficult to understand, and he does seem to rant. He can go for minutes not noticing someone's hand is up for a question.... in 10 person room. Knows his stuff, and is insightful if you can keep up with him. Not an easy professor to understand, but rewarding if you can. Good guy and very personable.

Comment:
Lectures were utterly useless. He just paced across the front of the room and rambled on and on. Probably would have done so if noone was there, not that many people were. Easy course though. 2 essays and exam on topic of choice. though he needs to work on telling students expectations for essays well before the due date intead of the week it's due

In all honesty, there have been very few prof's at Western that have amazed me. Bell is, by far, at the top of this small list. He truly is brilliant and I would encourage anyone to take a class with him. Also, unlike medicore Prof's who think they are above their students, Bell is very personable and actually really funny to talk with.

Comment:
He seems one of the more accomplished professors I've had. I dare not question his merit as a scholar. That said, he is an abysmal lecturer; he is unable to modulate his voice or communicate his assumed enthusiasm for the subject matter at all. Frankly, seems bothered by his teaching requirements. Don't take this course with him. And I got an A.

He is overall a good professor. He is a little bit random though. He has good lectures but why bother going to them when he has the lecture notes already printed for you in the course pack. He is pretty nice though. Good class.
