With great sadness I announce that Dr. Cottier, my mentor and dearest friend for 34 years, passed away on June 29th, 2015. The lifelong impact and love he had for his students cannot be matched. It is such a loss for those aspiring archaeologists who never got the chance to learn from and work along side him. Sylvia M.L. Kadlubowski, M.A., RPA

Take Doc's field school if you're at all interested in archaeology. It's the most fun class at Auburn (just be prepared to work hard).

Dr. Cottier is super cool and really smart, but not a great teacher. He changes topics a lot and gets distracted very easily. Try to take notes because the tests can be kind of hard. I wouldn't buy the textbook, only the workbook.

He is very scatterbrained, but the class itself is interesting. Going to class is not mandatory, but it does help because some of the things he says in lectures are word for word on the test. The tests are a little random and kinda difficult to study for, but he gives key terms before each test, so that's helpful. Overall, good teacher and class.

Very engaging. I took senior level classes. Enjoyed lectures-covers a lot of material so it is hard to keep up if U R not paying attention. tests are usually difficult but he grades on a curve & has bonus questions. A 75 can be an A! Tosses any that are disputed or missed by most. Gives U credit for attending class if you have a borderline grade.

RUN FAR FAR AWAY. Do NOT take this class. There was a lack of respect for students- he normally made us feel stupid and beneath him. This professor is very unclear about all material, particularly what will appear on exams. The exams were ridiculous and there was no chance for explanation of our given answers. AVOID AVOID AVOID.

THE WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. I did all the work and read everything and still did poorly on his tests. He's so scatterbrained and never stays on track. Stay so far away from this guy. If you're an anthropology major, I hope you make it out alive.

Cottier failed to engage me in his Intro to Arch class. He seems better suited to teaching a hands on course rather than a lecture, as he gets very distracted and tells stories. Very difficult to know what he will put on exams, which is frustrating as they are the only grades in the class. He can make students feel stupid sometimes.

Interesting lecturer, very funny. Great morning class. Makes a lot of typos on tests, but allows 1000 students to challenge test questions. Doesn't do this for later anthro classes. The lab is easy, and the test is more or less common sense. Doesn't use any electronic supplementary instruction, but does answer emails quickly.

I really enjoyed Dr. Cottier's class. There wasn't much of a workload, and class was really funny. Tests weren't too bad, and for every question 50% or more of the class missed, we were given points back. Avoid the front of the class if you don't want to answer questions or be teased.

Dr. Cottier is awesome. He always makes a ton of jokes during class, and usually jokes on students, but it's all for fun. He made class worth going to, and the material wasn't that bad, either. He'll also cancel class every Friday for the first 3 months, and he gives bonus points after tests, but it's not necessarily the day after the test.

I loved this class and Dr. Cottier! I thought everything was really easy and most of it you have learned before. It is my major, however. You don't have to come to class most Fridays, but make sure to come to the class the day after a test, because he gives out tons of bonuses.

This class is pretty easy. Make sure you go the day after the test because he gives bonus points on the exam, especially if the class average was low. Decent teacher, pretty funny. Tries to keep things interesting. I would take him again if I had to take another Anthropology class.

From what I've seen, most people either love or hate him. I didn't really like his class because it was boring, but he seems like a nice guy, although a bit crude. He's really just a crotchedy old man, so you can't take anything he says to heart (you know how old ppl are). I think it's about time for him to retire though, he's like 70 years old.

I'm an anthropology major, so I thought I'd be really into this class but it just wasn't that interesting. He's really wishy-washy on informing you what will be on the exam. I enjoyed the textbooks he assigned, even though we didn't actually talk about them in class (the info was on the tests tho). His tests are harder than I thought they'd be.

He uses various kinds of ways to explain artifacts. His class is entertaining and you will learn so much about anything else. He's been everywhere and you'll hear a lot of great stories. He is a great man. If you want to meet Indiana Jones take his class. He's the man. You will be made fun of if you are lucky etc etc etc...

He is not that great with intro classes b/c he hates them. He tells you to bye an expensive book that you won't use and only a quarter of what he says is on the test. He is not very helpful. Bye the U Notes thats what got me a B.

Hes a great guy, not always the most clear about what will or will not be on the test, but as long as you show up to class and at least pretend youre interested you'll do fine. He picks on students, but you have to realize that its all in good fun and take things with a grain of salt. I loved this class

He throws erasers. When he is lecturing, he emphasizes words and phrases that have nothing to do with the subject matter and that makes you think that he wants you to write it down. He makes students feel stupid for asking questions. He answers his phone in class. He's not very nice. Not approachable.
