I initially took phil 101, then I liked it so much I ended up taking enough of his courses to have a second major. Follow the examples he hands out to you...if you do you cant go wrong. I have a lot of respect for Dr. Hoaglund, and have kept his books

He is deffintly one of the best teacher's here and I am saddened to see him go. I think most people have a problem with him because they are not willing to put in effort into his classes. I had him for 101, 102, and 305. I got a C in 101 because i wasnt a phil major and didnt care, but then i gained interest & I got A's in both other classes

As a student, I did not know whether the book he used was peer-reviewed, since he used his book. After taking classes with other professors who teach critical thinking, I believe this professor lacks erudition. May be why he is quite rude and why his grades seem to correspond with his personal feelings about a student.

He's pretty tough and doesn't really teach. Be prepared to gain all information from the text - and if you don't have a previous knowledge of western phil. the class is impossible. He's sweet if you go to him after hours but his tests are ridiculous hard.

He seems like a nice guy, but if you have to deal with him aside from the class he turns out to be extremely rude. He wrote the book, yet he does not even seem like he knows what he's talking about half the time. Don't take him!

The class is somewhat useless, but an easy class to fill a requirement and it goes by quickly with the exercises. Some of it gets sorta complicated but you really don't have to put a lot of time into the class to get a decent grade and tests are worth like 115 pts so theres lots of room for error. I got an A & the journal wasn't that bad. Ok guy.

he wrote the book, so he knows his stuff. i HATED diagramming arguments, once we got past that the class was a breeze. the critical thinking journal SUCKS. it's an okay class, but you have to be good at diagramming arguments. tests aren't too hard. you have to read and know what your doing.

seems interesting at first, but then takes a turn for the worst. grades completely on correctness, so even if you try hard, you still fail. pulls grades out of know where it seems like as well. always comes 5 minutes late to class.

He is really nice, but goes on and on and on! Its not difficult information, but there is A LOT of it. The questions come straight from the reading assignments and for me its easier to just got over them myself because when he discusses them in class it is SO boring.

i think there are better professors than him. he wrote the book, so he's SO picky on what he wants. he's possibly the smartest professor, but very hard to please. he's stuck on having everything his way or no way...the critical thinking journal is annoying...this class will make you analyze any sentence now you read..

i'm so confused when people say that hoaglund has a humor?! he's the most dry witted person i've ever met. he's fairly easy, but so hard to listen to because he drones on. i feel like theres so many other better things i could do with my time...only taking it cuz its required anyway...he's fairly easy but such a bore!!
