John makes no sense in his lectures, he simply reads from novels you read and youll be lucky if you can stay awake. Extremely hard marker, if you dont say something the way he likes it, you will be marked wrong, its his way or the highway

If you go to his classes and ask questions and butter him up and and therefore make him like you he will mark you slightly higher than what you deserve. BUT IF YOU SKIP HIS CLASS and don't make him love you, no matter the excuse, if he has any reason to dislike you HARDEST MARKER EVER. Also dreadful lectures, useless, painful and uninforming.

He is very unorganized in his lectures and does not keep me interested and makes you lose focus. never know what his expectations are for tests which are made up by 10-15 short to long answer questions (the good the bad and the ugly).don't understand the material i have to teach everything myself, all he does is read out of the books. Never again

good lecture but it's only a summary of your readings. DOES NOT USE BRIGHTSPACE AT ALL, which. Only 3 tests and the exam and one small essay, marks tough but he gives out reviews (big and only 1/2 of it is on the actual test) and uses the same questions almost down to the letter. Easy pass if you can study. CAN pass with bad attendance but its hard

Bland and unorganized. Can't keep his timeline on track. Goes off topic. Not really sure what we're even learning right now. Would definitely avoid taking this prof. Overall very poor quality for a fairly simple course.

A classy, well-read man who is also patient & down-to-earth. His standards for written material are not unreasonable for adults in university, and should help you improve if you take his comments on your work seriously (i.e. like an adult). His lecturing style, imo, shines in small, upper-year classes. (On an unrelated note, he's also smokin' hot.)

Very frustrating class and prof. Very boring and long lectures and he is such a tough grader. The material is not hard but he marks it very hard. I somehow got a B despite the rest of the class failing, but fought so hard for that B. Would not take a class by him again. No idea why I got some of the marks I did.

He's very helpful and clear, but the classes are basically just him reading passages from the book to you.

Even though I struggled the first semester with this course, John Mak is the man, always willing to help, very clear and concise how he talks, you have to work hard in this class cause he follows a standard, easily one of the most intelligent profs out there, if your willing to put in hard work, John Mak is the guy!

Great professor, keeps the lectures interesting, good use of textbooks. Ability to make dry material interesting, easy to listen to when he lectures. Keeps the class involved, allows for questions and provides thoughtful answers. I've been a student at SMU for several years and he's one of the best professor's I've had thus far.

Dr. Mackinnon's Intro Phil class is one I wish I'd never taken. He is a very nice guy who makes the concepts in the class easy to understand but the material is REALLY boring and his tests are difficult. Going to class is painful but it's the only way to do well.

Great professor, easy to understand and really wants his students to learn something. He's really not that hard of a marker; he just has standards. If you go to class and pay attention, you'll do fine.

He is such a nice guy, and genuinely cares about how your doing in the course. He is always willing to help and you can call him up if your veer to swamped to visit his office. He`s really big on detail, not a hard marker but can tell when you don`t know your stuff. Attendance is a must, nothing ever posted online.

Really nice prof and I enjoyed the class but he is unclear about his expectations. His lectures are not well organized and I found it difficult to distinguish the important points for notes. Probably the kind of prof you need to get to know outside of class to understand him.

I did not receive a great mark in this class, but I did receive a solid thematic approach to introductory philosophy. If you are looking for a course that is structured with classifications, this is not for you. Without consulting the prof, I went ahead and wrote a paper that was not among the stipulated subjects. I was not penalized.

I have three degrees.I majored in Phil when I was doing my BA tens years ago. Worst prof that I ever had. Being an educator myself, its makes to sad to see that students are still having the same issue with him now. He can't write test questions and can't give a clear lecture. Stay away from his class. There are much better profs at smu.
