Comment:
For beginners in Japanese this class may be challenging (read your textbook is my best advice). Topics are covered at a fast rate, but Mertz was very helpful. Expect to have homework daily and to have to print things off a lot; however, Mertz is pretty lenient with due dates and grading. There will be quizzes basically every day so go to class.

Personally I think Mertz-sensei is awesome! He does grade pretty leniently compared to other teachers, and he can spend too much time talking about some topics in class but he has a sense of humor. It's helpful that he speaks English since he knows what mistakes you're likely to make, and he has a lot of cool cultural anecdotes.

He focused more on linguistics than Japanese... but he grades things rather leniently, for my class, everyone's grade was out of the class's highest grade. apparently every japanese not tokyo accent is not correct though....

He really loves what he does. He's into the japanese culture and really embraces it. He's really helpful in giving out tips on how to best remember grammar.

Lectures were unorganized, gets bogged down in technicalities frequently. We've never finished anything he's started due to his tangents. The topics he covers are interesting, but he has no clue how to present them in any way to make it easily understood.

Stories were confusing, lectures were kind of scattered with culture ramblings. But he has interesting ideas - just not very organized and clear. Relaxed class and very group conversation driven.
