Dr. Stubbs is my favorite history prof! He may have high expectations and a lot of reading but I have learned more in his class than any other of my history courses. He is organized and does not waste your time. I have found that his emphasis on historiography is not matched in other courses and I am so thankful that he includes this!

John Stubbs is a great guy, and very dedicated. However, his expectations are nearer to masters or PhD level then to an undergrad class. I loved the class and liked him, but it was a gpa hit I didn't need. Expect 200-300 pages of reading a week, a 25 page paper with more sources then you thought possible (add that to the course readings).

Comment:
Do NOT take a class with Stubbs unless you are prepared to TONS of reading; I am an A student that received a C in this class. If you have lots of passion for the subject you'll enjoy what is otherwise a ton of extraneous reading. If not, avoid. Take his source suggestions for your paper seriously; you're expected to use them (all of them).

His class has a lot more work than other history classes. Unlike other history classes, he also teachers historiography. His TAs are also moerate markers. To do well in the course, you must put efforts into all assignments and participate in tutorials. One final thing, unlike other history courses, you get to choose your own term paper topic. :)

Very hard professor. Completely cold, especially if you don't suck up he hates you and marks you really low. I really hated this class because of him which was unfortunate because I love the actual content of the class.

No intrigue whatsoever. I've never been so disgusted with a prof's attitude and coldness. I feel he is useless. Perhaps more engaging in smaller, more specialized classes. Would never take a class with him again.

One of the BEST History Professors at SFU! Take him if you can! Beware though: LOTS of reading. Not a Prof for slackers.

Awesome Prof! Very smart, very clear and very organized. Cares a lot about students and always willing and available to offer help and advice. Slackers beware! He expects a lot of work from students (tons of reading) but hey that's what university is for.

One of the best profs I have had at SFU (my favorite). Intelligent prof (PhD and everything) but isn't cocky towards his students even if you ask simple questions. Really helpful and clear about papers and lectures. Knows his topics very well. Alot of reading but if you go to lectures and write good notes there is no reason to get less than a B.

I took Balance of Power with him. He's a good prof. I cherish the essay he marked (he's the only prof who ever wrote "this is exactly how all history papers should be written")

Stubbs puts the ad in ad hoc. All over the place, little conherency b/w weekly readings and class lectures. If you take his class have him as a TA, the student TAs are awful.

WARNING! Be prepared to work your ass off!!! He assigns ALOT of reading (+100pg/week) on top of hundreds of pages more for your paper. Overall though, he is a great prof. Knowledgeable and has very interesting lectures. Hard-reasonable marker. I enjoyed this class 100% even though I had to work hard
