DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, unless you would like to fall asleep and not learn. Had to curve every single test we took because everyone always failed. Nothing in the outlines he gives out are on the test. He seems like a nice person, but extremely boring teacher.

Took this class for an intro into ancient philosophy. Dont take this class if you dont have to. He reads from two books and gets very sidetracked in what he is saying. Only gets through two pages of the book a day. Has no study guides that are helpful for the test. Gives packets for the books but the information for the test isnt drawn from it.

Dr. Chuckles will either put you asleep with his lectures or drive you up a wall with his guffaws after every sentence he says. Stay away!

a big chunk of your grade will be from the writing assignments! in them, he looks for several pages of information from the assigned readings (at least 3), including page numbers, sections and numbers (ex. 86C) all the books are on spark notes which helps when writing these, its basically a translation !! tests are hard but, but he will curve :)

I am only 3 weeks into this class, I still don't have a clear grasp on what he is talking about majority of the time. His lectures help to understand the text in terms of translation, but as for understanding the concepts of the text you are on your own. When you are assigned papers, there is no clear expectation. pick another class for humanities!

Tests are based more on the plot of the stories than the philosophic aspect. The tests are pretty hard because they were unpredictable. Out of three exams, he only curved one. We had about 10 homework essays (2 pages) on upcoming sections of the book, but other than that the tests were the only things he graded. he's a very nice guy though.

Intro to ancient philosophy is a boring class, and his lectures are very dull. Attendance was taken in the beginning of the semester. I have not spent much time reading or studying the materials, but I estimate I will receive a B or an A in the class based on grades I have gotten. Textbooks are cheap, and grades aren't posted online.

I'm a philosophy major so I probably found it more interesting than most folks will. It can get a little boring but don't be afraid to ask questions and interject. It helps everybody. People complain there aren't clear objectives but you get to help write the test. Just do the readings. He's always available outside of class and willing to help.

This man quite possibly be the worst professor on campus. His class consists of him reading from a book in a very monotone voice, with random tangents that might pertain to the lecture, but aren't clearly defined. Gives you no real context of anything and expects you to be a philosopher from the beginning of the class. Don't take this class

Only stayed in this class for the first two weeks of the semester before dropping. Rambled on, would start talking about class readings only to get sidetracked and drone on and on about something unrelated. Beware.

Very committed and knowledgeable in his field (PHL). Also very kind. Very monotone and dull, every class was a lecture with little dialogue between the doctor and the students. 50 minutes of him talking. The things he says are very interesting, but if you stop paying attention for just a second, you'll be completely lost. speaking as a PHL minor.

Vielkind is intelligent and kind, but his lectures can be a little confusing. I think his class would be better if other students would speak up and engage in discussion. He is very encouraging of people speaking up in class. I learned a lot, but sometimes his expectations for assignments were unclear.

Dr. Vielkind has been my favorite professor at MU. His methods of teaching are refreshing as it like one large philosophical discussion, and if YOU participate it only makes the class better. It is best if you have some sort of idea about PHL before you take it, so just look up some intro stuff before it starts. He's also kind and understanding

Dr. Vielkind is a great professor. He is very nice and understanding of the students. His lectures can be a bit boring, but he really knows what he is talking about and can provide great insight. If you do the readings and show up to class you will do well. He gave our class extra credit and gave us every opurtunity to do well. Definitely take him!

I feel like I would fare better in this class had I more interest in Philosophy. His lectures include him going off-topic for most of the time. If you ask a question, he takes up most of the class time babbling about other philosophy stuff that he doesn't teach in his class. Very understanding towards students. Papers have guidelines.
