Comment:
Took LING 100A first year, and it was one of the worst classes I ever took. Rude, insipid professor. Exams and test questions could be interpreted in several ways but there was only one right answer to her. When confronted about possible solutions or questions she was defensive and unhelpful. I would suggest not to take this course with this prof.

Do yourself a favour and avoid this prof. Engages class by standing at front staring and reading her notes, rarely looks up boring. Test questions poorly written; multiple interpretations but only one right answer. Intimidates students who ask questions in class. Requires private office visits and then forgets what she tells you.

Judith is an absolutely lovely lady. As much as I do enjoy her, I had a hard time following her lectures. Textbook had 90% of lecture materials, but lectures didn't help me retain info. I felt like I was drowning in the factual information. It would be wise to re-organise notes/handouts in a more digestible way. Use handouts for most of the course.

Great teacher. Funny and straightforward. If you want easy "do nothing" class, this isn't the class for you. She made Linguistics fun.

She wont allow cellphones or laptops because of the distractions they can cause as well as the fact that you can't draw the symbols with a laptop, so don't show up with one. PSA - don't spend extra for the online access code in a new text book. The online material is EXACTLY what is in the text/study book; no extra readings available or answers.

I really like Judith as she seems relatively down to earth. Something about her makes me feel like she's been through a lot in her life. She just seems sad a lot. All that aside, she is one of the best linguistics profs at UVic. Knowledgeable, will answer questions, doesn't give tons of homework. Tests are hard, but she provides study guides.

Dr. Nylvek is a very nice woman and interesting to speak with outside of class but she has extremely strict rules about any technology in her classroom. She is a very tough marker, exams are not by any means easy and the average grade for my class was 65%. If you do not attend her classes you will not pass.

Terrible, will NOT take her course anymore and does NOT like linguistic amymore. She hate electronic devices so don't use phones during her class. It is unfair for International students, they cannot search words they don't understand. If she found that you are using phones, she will be angry and shout to you rudely.

I am a international teacher currently enrolled at uvic and Dr. Nylvek taught me a lot of things, none of which related to the class material. She teaching style exemplified everything I learned not to do while in training. Chastising students, lack of teaching compassion, stifling atmosphere and teacher ennui are her calling cards.

As a teacher coming to Canada for certification, Judith Nylvek is a wonderful practitioner at exemplifying what not to do in a classroom. Feedback: Nylvek's teaching style lacks any form of positive feedback. Motivation: her attitude sucks the motivation from her students Evaluation: her marking schema is not effective and overly harsh.

Very well organized. Not a hard marker. Go to class, do homework, you'll be fine. Really knows what she's talking about. Study guides helpful for exams. A bit monotonous but actually funny. Loves dogs :) I'm not a linguistics major and I liked her class. I think people are basing their opinions on her demeanour and not on her teaching ability.

Read your textbook and do all of the in-chapter practice questions. Judith gives you a participation exercise almost every class. The content is boring, but if you don't show up to class you simply won't pass the exams. She is a tough grader and tries to slip you up on some questions in the exam. Read exam questions carefully!

Seems very unenthusiastic about her job. Gives pop quizzes all the time. Is rude to students who ask her questions. She makes what should be my favourite class a very negative experience. I'm very disappointed with her because I pay a lot of money to go to school. It is unfortunate that she may turn many students away from a great subject.

Avoid taking her for your linguistics requirement. Thanks to her I don't like linguistics as much anymore. She seems to prefer linguistics majors, does not go out of her way to help you understand concepts. She relies mainly on the course study guide, did not have the text on reserve (not helpful if you are on a budget).

I love this prof. She is wrongly judged. She is actually quite funny once you get to know her and she is very intelligent. I have had her for three classes. I am an average B student but she provides lecture notes on moodle and great study guides so with her I have always received an A. Love her, just be patient with getting to know her demeanour.

she stated right in class that previous students she had disliked that she would try to give them the worst marks she could. For some reason she decided I was one of them, I am an A average student and she gave me Cs. She would ask for opinions and shoot them down. very closed minded and has favours students which reflects in the grades

I think Dr. Nylvek gets an undeserved bad rap. She can seem "unfriendly" but she really isn't. She's quite nice and helpful if you show interest in the subject and put effort into it. She's especially good in LING 100B as opposed to 100A. I think she might enjoy those topics a bit more and it makes class more fun. She really knows her stuff.
