Probably my favorite professor and once I took her intro to film class, I decided to make Film Studies my second major. I would definitely recommend her classes and she knows her stuff. She makes class and the films you view interesting. Difficult grader, but that's what make its challenging . Really a great professor.

Will not let you leave class under any circumstances. I have taken 3 classes with her and there have been countless times where I am no longer focusing on class because I badly need to use the restroom. Also she wants her students to repeat the ideas she talks about in class, challenging her generally leads to a lower grade. Would not recommend

Prof Kalinak might be my least favorite professor at RIC. She will not even let you use the bathroom or leave for any reason. She's rude and a tough grader to boot. Tests aren't hard but the papers she grades pretty harshly. If you're even 2 minutes late shell make you see her after class, do not recommend.

Don't drink a 32-ounce coffee before class; you can stand in the back if you're sleepy, but you can't walk in and out during a classic film. She knows her stuff. Be prepared, participate, and make the most of your education. She can be very funny, especially when music in a film gets her going. She made my writing 100 percent better. Always fair.

You MUST read in order to understand what is going on in class. She's trying to elevate your work, and she doesn't leave slack for slackers. Just read the damn stuff, preferably on time. And participate, challenge her as she challenges you too. She also gives an impression that she is very solid in her understanding of ALL things.

Comment:
Markedly condescending and at times outright disrespectful. She thinks she is better than everyone else and acts surprised when someone answers a difficult question. During the first day of class the projector wasnt working so she phoned some helpers who tried their best to get it to work. Lets just say she yelled and kicked them out.

Kalinak's classes are enlightening. The work is difficult but it makes for some brilliant discussions. Do the readings and participate if you want to get anything out of the class. It's not for everyone-there's no easy A, but there is an A available to those who put in the effort. She grades fairly and gives everyone ample opportunity to do well.

Comment:
Kalinak is very opinionated. If you want a good grade, just write down her opinions and regurgitate them on papers. If you disagree with her you will get a poor grade no matter who well written your piece is. She does not like disagreements with her opinions.

Not a film student by ANY means, only took this class because she was teaching it. TOTALLY worth it. She's an amazing professor, so passionate about the things she teaches, and intelligent to boot. DO THE READING and actually put some effort into doing well in her class. She's tough, but you'll find your experience well worth it.

Hard, but amazing teacher. She teaches the most interesting film classes I've ever taken. You can really tell how passionate she is about film/film music/and her job. She's strict and a harsh grader, but it's worth it- you will learn a lot and she makes everything so interesting.

To preserve your own sanity, do not take this course with Dr. Kalinak. She's extremely intelligent, yes, but seems to believe that her students are not. She's discouraging and she's a ridiculous grader when it comes to papers. She openly states how much better film is, so maybe she's not bad when it comes to film, but don't take theory with her.

Be ready to be judged if you are NOTa film studies major because she will automatically not give you the time of day along with give you the cold shoulder when asking or answering a question. She is also a stickler for MLA format if you do not follow it to a T she will fail you!my suggestion is when she asks what your major is you say undecided!
