Honestly, I have never been so disappointed in a professor's lack of clarity and inability to help students learn. He always goes 5-10min over time and his Exams are impossible, he gives you two pages of terms (around 50-100) and then 4 possible essays and the Exam had 10 questions and 1 Essay that were created to make you fail. Do not take..

Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. Constantly contradicts himself when giving directions on how to write your papers. He grades extremely tough and has horrible hand writing. His lectures are also very dry and boring. I do not suggest taking him, I regret not switching out of his class at the beginning of the semester.

Dr. Shields is my favorite professor at Millersville. I got 100% in his Intro to Language class. Just pay attention and participate and you'll pass, easily. Also, I would take the objective tests because they seem to be a lot easier.

He is a very specific grader. He always compared my class to english majors when non of us were. He did not really help you with your work. His lectures are so long and boring. It seemed like he did not care about his students which made it hard for me to want to go to class. He has quizzes every class, which are all on useless material.

One of the most amazing English professors that I've ever had. I had him for Old English and his passion for the subject really shows. I came to class just to hear his lectures and his tests are pretty easy.

By far one of the hardest English courses I've ever taken. The lectures are super boring, monotone, and there just isn't any interaction with the students. The paper requirements are unclear. But he provides 2 rewrites, which are a joke. Unless you can decode his illegible feedback in handwriting and make a perfect paper. Dont take this class.

Dr. Shields actually cares about students' education by providing feedback and giving as many points as possible on exams. He speaks quickly and a lot and his handwriting is difficult to read. However, he really is one of the best professors at MU. I advice taking his courses over anyone else's'.

He grades very harshly for a english comp class. For example, if you go to office hours he will tell you that your paper is great and that he will probably give you an A or a B, and then when you get the paper back you have a C or D. Also, I have taken all of my papers to the writing center multiple times and still have not receive above a C+.

Had to withdraw from the class. Huge workload. Readingsreading checks twice a week, on top of essays that you barely have enough time to write. If this is the only class you're taking, maybe you'll pass. Otherwise, good luck...

I have never felt so stupid in a class ever. If you ask him for help outside of class, he will help and say everything else is fine but in reality still has many problems with your paper. If you have a course requirement for another class that is during our time editing papers, he will exempt you from the class but he still takes off a letter grade

His handwriting is illegible which makes your two rewrites a pain. He is very passionate about his choices so you can not persuade to change your grade. Half of the things that you learn in class won't even help with your writing. Final paper is on our strengths in writing which he doesn't tell us because he only tells us what we are doing wrong.

He is the toughest grader I have ever endured. If you fix your mistakes on one paper, he will find new flaws in your next one. He allows you to rewrite two papers but expects them to be perfect. It doesn't help that the examples he makes you read are, according to him, not good examples of how to write the assignment. It's redundant.

His handwriting is horrible and does not always treat his students with respect unless he likes you. He always takes the most minimal mistakes in papers seriously so that he can give out lower grades. He treats the class like an english major class. The lectures are the driest things and tend to have nothing to do with learning new ideas

Okay I seriously do not know how this guy has such a good grade on here. He was one of the toughest professors I have ever had. I have never heard of so many English majors to fail a class. I some how passed with a B but only because I saw him for office hours every single week. SO much time and effort was put into this class it was exhausting.

Very dynamic lecturer. He never blows off questions or treats them in matter-of-fact ways. Instead, he finds a way to integrate every question into his lecture, managing to weave everything into a coherent whole. This lecture style demands attendance and he tests only what is discussed in class, never on readings. One of Millersville's best.

Dr. Shields is (so far) my favorite professor. Hes so enthusiastic about linguistics annd it rubs off on his students. He is very willing to help. To pass his classw you need to show up. And if you do miss be sure to get someone elses notes. It isnt an easy class, you have to show up and take plenty of notes. But Shields handles his area very well

One of my three all-time favorite professors! While his classes aren't easy, you actually learn the material, as opposed to just memorizing it and spitting it back on a test. His enthusiasm for linguistics is contagious and I even enjoy three-hour lecture classes with this professor. He is a great example of what college professors should be!

This class is difficult. In the class I was in about 30% were retaking it. Dr. Shields talks too fast and relies on two or three people to dictate the speed of the material. Maybe MU should find a second professor to give students an option.
