Overall pretty straight forward class. You observe and draw every week and the prof holds a class critique. This is great to see other peers' works and see where you and others can improve. However, drawing can be time consuming so sometimes it can be hard to find motivation or time for the homework. Otherwise, great prof and helpful feedback

My only problem is sometimes he contradicts himself. One time he told me to intentionally draw an unintentional line. Another time he had the class stop in the middle of working to compliment my piece on it's contour lines. Then on midterm critique he said the piece had poor contour lines. He also lets his co-worker control his opinions on pieces

A can't win case, they told me to stop focusing on my class work, figure drawing not drawing 2, and focus on homework, I did that, it was good, spent hours and hours only to get a D for not working hard on class work which he told me not to,, catch 22 much, UCF's art program is a joke, they train you the way they want to, programming much, no art

He has a huge respect for art and expects students to as well. You're going to have to work, but he is kind and helpful. He's definitely knowledgeable and super willing to show you where he started out in terms of art. I'd highly recommend him if you're serious about art.

Nice and easy class. Just make sure to take notes and study. Can be very boring at times, especially if he doesn't turn on all the lights, you'll pass out.

Prepare to work outside of class A LOT. You MUST have time to commit to doing the homework drawings which become longer and longer. Class was extremely helpful in learning how to draw but if you're not an art major I would not recommend it. Mid term/Finals took over 20+ hrs of outside time to complete.

Take him if you are serious about art & are willing to work hard. Expect to invest at least 6 hours in each drawing. He's encouraging, kind, knowledgeable and will usually try to find something positive about your drawing and is straight forward on how to improve. You will see improvements if you actually put the effort in!

No textbook used. Class is mandatory but fun to attend. He is straightforward with what he expects so if you just listen to what he wants, you will probably succeed. Homework is usually studio/sketchbook drawings 3 hours a week.

Having no interest in drawing, this was a hard class for me. If you don't like it or aren't very good at it, you will have a bad semester. The class is for serious art students and I'm not an art major. Kevin did not give very clear instructions at all, so be prepared to be confused and to work on drawing almost every day of the week to keep up.

Very clear and straightforward with lectures. Prof is kind and willing to answer questions during/after class. Take notes on everything he says because it's straight from the textbook which you won't *really* need unless you're actually interested in non-western art. Not difficult for an art history class which was a relief. Advice: Use flashcards!

Nice guy, super clear professor. I went to the class maybe six times all semester and got an A. Only three test based entirely from the book, so you can basically teach yourself. Interesting topics. Recommended for someone who wants an easy but interesting class.

I had Haran for both Drawing II and History of NonWestern Art. He's a great teacher who is understanding. In drawing, I think he is a bit more lenient than the others and not so harsh when it came to critques. For history, he had only 3 exams and as long as you listened, took notes, and studied you did well. BEST PART, DOESN'T TEST ON DATES!

Comment:
In a Rivers/Haran joint class, you will have the misfortune to have to listen to Rivers blab on 99% of the time. Haran's job seemed to be to stand there and look pretty. Rivers obviously does not allow Haran time to shine, which is disappointing since he is kind, encouraging, and knowledgeable. Soft spoken but a good teacher.

If you're taking Drawing I or II you'll end up being taught by Kevin Haran and Robert Rivers in joint class sessions. Pray that you get more time with Haran as he can actually teach you something. He's not vague, he's straight forward, shows you technique, etc. You'll learn a lot if you follow his direction.

Haran is a great professor. Very understanding but very soft spoken. In fact, so soft spoken, I've always found myself falling asleep in his survey class. Everything is through text book though, so attendance is not mandatory. Just study hard from the book, listen to what he has to say (he repeats whats on the exam often) and you will do fine.

Haran shows a way of rapid development to see "through" objects. He can sugar-coat some work, but will praise those who listen to what he says the most. And you will see that in the work that is produced.

Professor K. Haran is well adept in the practices of Drawing and Painting. He expects you to follow the rules and practices that this area of the art program provides. This is not an easy class if you aren't following the practices and rules provided in the class, and your tenure must correspond with these rules & practices. Great and honest Prof.
