Students seem to either hate her or love her. Either way she makes an impression, which I guess tells you something. I happen to think she's a damn good prof. Some people seem to be thrown by her odd affect, but she knows her stuff, and seems to honestly care about her students and her teaching. Rare enough qualities at Smith and in the academic community in general.

Very dedicated. Unusual sense of humor but it grows on you. Her lectures are captivating, she likes to shake you awake by saying something random and out there. The class is instructive and its innovative fromat makes it a fantastic change.

i'm taking this course now and it's my best course this semester. you have to go to class because the lectures introduce a lot of addition information and you have to do the readings. i guess i'm saying you just have to work. but you will learn so much about crime and criminals. great course

I had Kim for intro and crime and both were outstanding. Yes, she knows her stuff, but she's definitely not arrogant. She keeps you interested in even the most dry and complicated stuff. She has become my favorite prof at Smith. She's the most approachable and friendly prof I've known. My only complaint is that she doesn't teach more classes.

Such mixed reviews of Prof Lyons on this site, but I personally found her very unclear, arrogant, and unfocused. I knew more about Criminology coming into the class than most, and was the course ever a waste. If you want entertainment, I guess she's your lady. Don't expect much more.

Kim Lyons is one of the most overrated professors at Smith. She's a bit of an egomaniac, and her lectures are some of the most boring, insipid drivel that I've ever had to endure. I'd never, ever take another class with her. Take SOC with someone else if you actually want to learn something.

She really knows her stuff, and if you have any interest in sociology you should take this class under her. The assignments are a bit tedious, but not difficult. Her class is usually funny and engaging, and the material is fascinating.

Professor Lyons is one of the most engaging, intelligent, friendly and funny instructors I have had. She is both approachable and not afraid to speak her mind. I like professors who don't coddle students and she definitely will not coddle you. Tough/Fair

Best class I've taken in Sociology. Great lectures (always right ON-TOPIC), great readings, great projects. I got an A, but had to work for it. If you're willing to study and want to learn A LOT (!) about the Sociology of Crime, take it!
