Try and participate in class and get one thing wrong? Prepare to be torn into. I learned so much more from just reading the textbook and going over it with friends than I ever did in class. Lectures are expected in college, but usually they have to do with the subject of the class. Not here. Waste of time.

Usually it's the students who are sloppy and unorganized but in this case it's the professor. There's constant preaching of diligence but it's hypocritical for a professor to demand devotion when it's not given back. You literally waste money for attending this class so do yourself a favor and learn it on your own because that's what you'll do.

Definitely not a class for an easy A. She doesn't get to spend a lot of time with J2-4 students so make friends, practice with one another, and ask questions when you can. Things you might get called out for are incorrect page orders on homework, not studying enough, late homework (which she allows), and bad quality homework. Be organized. Have fun

She would have to be one of my favourite professors at Delta. She is strict, however just study hard and do your homework before it is due because you will be behind. Although she can be strict she also has a great sense of humour and that is what made me want to stay in the class.

I enjoyed her class and am sad there's no J5. Yes she's a strict teacher, but she's a CARING teacher who does want her students to learn and pass. This class was hard, but what language course isn't? I have passed all four levels J1-4. Even when I messed up on a midterm she went over it with me and allowed me to correct mistakes for higher grade.

Its pretty much a self taught class. Teacher doesn't spend much time teaching, and everything comes directly from the book. Walks away periodically. Puts students on the spot, yells at and pressures them. Has high standards, would not take if you're interested in learning Japanese. Allows for late work but it has to be turned in to take the final.

Shek goes on tangents a lot, but she's a nice lady and I enjoyed having her. She's lenient on late hw but don't procrastinate because the hw WILL pile up fast. Actually study and you shouldn't have a problem passing with a C or higher. Got an A for J1-3 and a B for J4.

Very lenient about late homework, but requires it all turned in before midterm final. even though sensei is teaching three classes in the same room (Japanese 2, 3 and 4 are taught simultaneously), making the class feel strapped for time and requires the student to self-study, sensei checks up on every group to ensure all is well.

Sensei Shek does NOT put anyone "on the spot". She's extremely fair and kind. If anyone ever was "called out" it was because they were goofing around, not turning in homework or calling "wakarimasen" whenever hey were asked to read. Don't let these reviews deter you from taking the class, Ms. Shek is a great teacher.

Took all 4 Japanese classes from Shek sensei. Not easy. If u fall behind studying lessons its trouble. Every lesson learned is immediately used daily. 5 days a week. If u fall behind on HW its not too bad if u make up quickly. I used the native Japanese tutors and was great help. She less harsh if she knows ur serious. Proud to complete series. GL!

Sensei often rambles on when talking to class. Sensei will put you on the spot if you even look like you don't know the material, reminding you to study more. Lenient with HW being late (With penalty) but you must turn it all in before midterm or final, both of which are quite difficult.

Pay close attention during lectures, participate in class, and study constantly. She expects you to do so in order to pass her class with a satisfactory grade. The homework is not too difficult as long as you study the materials. As long as you remain alert, diligent, and open-minded, you will enjoy the class overall. She's a wonderful teacher : )

If you want to learn Japanese this class is very possible to pass. Team up with some classmates or ask the students in the more advances classes to make sure you understand everything. If you don't study the material she will call you out, but just shrug, laugh, and apologize and you'll be fine. :D I love this class. And do all of your homework.

First thing first you need your books asap, they are used heavily. Get your hiragana down asap and make time to study! She will put you on the spot, you honestly need a thick skin for this class. She can be confusing from time to time w/ due dates. You will need to study like crazy, anywhere you can and before class to get it down so you do okay!

Shek Sensei is a strick teacher but I really love her. This class is very challenging as Japanese is very different from English. The grammar is quite complex. She does grade tests on the curve. If you work very hard an A is possible, but otherwise no way. If you can memorize everything that would help you a lot.

If you enjoy Japanese culture and really want to learn the language then do not let the instructor scare you off good or bad. This class has lots of homework, expect no homework breaks. You will get use to the curriculum. As for the teacher you will get use to her teaching methods as well. Plus this class is really fun, I met cool people in it.

Horrible--just plain horrible; the tutor is more helpful than Sensei Shek. Sensei Shek deviates a lot, her accent is at times hard to comprehend, her grading ytem is ludicrous, and if you don't have the material down, be prepared to be picked on a lot. I've heard similar horror stories in her Chinese class. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
