Very nice guy! I did well in his class but, he teaches by questioning. It makes you think but, his class is not for someone who cannot teach him or her self. Class-time is set to discuss the material, not to learn it. I had him for Theory I, III, and Aurals I. I would recomend Silverman over him for theory and Maggio over him for theory.

If you've NEVER had theory before, he is NOT the teacher to take. He does expect you to basically teach the material to yourself, but does encourage questions and i guess tries to answer the best he can. I needed two tutors on the side and still ended up with a grade below average..

It's taken a while to fully understand him. But, despite appearances, he is a great guy and does care about his students if you take the subject seriously. He can actually be really funny too when you know him better.

I throughly enjoyed taking his class. It seemed I was one of two in my section who actually read the text, and coincidentally was one of two students actually able to excel in the class. He's funny, approachable, and always willing to help. If you have even a modi**** of intellect, take his courses and enjoy them.

Nelson is a great teacher if you want to be treated like an adult instead of a high school student. He not only actively encourages disagreement with him and debate, but loves a good argument and is not afraid to concede points. Be prepared to do your own work - hey, welcome to the real world.

Not always easy to understand, a little abstract, but ask questions. Read the textbook, because he uses it a lot. I enjoyed him as a teacher, and feel like I understand theory better than I did at the beginning.

High expectations. He expects you to read the chapter and do the work associated with it. Best advice is to do the reading and the work because the examples he does are from the book. Ask questions, he does answer them, and don't ask questions about things that are not in the syllabus because it will just side track him and get everyone confused

If you have Nelson, you better get used to teaching yourself, or you better get used to failing alot. Poor excuse for a "teacher". I am aware that this is college, but most of us are here to learn how to teach others, NOT ourselves. Try actually TEACHING, instead of going off into your own little world.

very poor professor -- gives work on one chapter and lectures on a completely different one --teaches a theory class like a comp class and is utterly nonsensical -- made me want to change my major to something totally non-musical

Interesting guy. Uses a lot of abstract concepts in his teaching...sort of hard to understand. Ask for concrete examples and extra help, and you'll be OK. Dry personality, but fair grader. Relatively easy tests, but the classwork can be difficult. Just don't be afraid to ask for extra help!

not a good teacher, doesn't explain concepts very well and expects you to learn large portions of difficult material on your own. theory with Rozin was much better, Nelson should consider retiring.

i find that he is not very helpful. i have not experience with computer music except for finale (if indeed you can call it that). he is not also supportive of my tomal ideas at all. i'm all for expanding my mind and my writing. but when i try something i don't like it, i want to write what i like and what i hear in my head not what someone else thinks that i should write. that defeats the whole purpose of being a composer.

He is the first teacher at this school that I have ever seen to have an obvious double standard. He does not teach at all.He doesn't give a satisfactory explanation for anything you ask him. I have no idea what he is still doing here but he put Dr. Herman out of a job. He should totally be fired.NOW

Don't expect him to teach you anything during the semester. He makes you teach yourself. Classes seem pointless. I'd suggest another teacher over him if u can.

Laziest Professor in the World. Don't expect him to actually teach you anything. He skipped 6 out of 14 lessons and ended the ones I had 10 minutes early. Keyword=Lazy and getting ready to retire. If you want to end up a starving composer than take Nelson

Don't take Dr. Nelson if you need somebody to hold your hand. He tought me a lot this semester and was completely supportive. He expected a lot of me and i appreciated that. In music, I think learning on your own is important sometimes.
