I was very nervous to take another public speaking course, but he puts the class at ease. Super friendly and you really do become a better speaker taking this course from him.

Professor Mayfield is a GREAT professor for SCOM 242. Six speeches - one is a group speech and one is ungraded - one paper - two outlines all the grades you get. He grades easily, but a lot of his grading is based on how he feels about you. Be nice to him, come to class, participate, and you will be fine.

Mixed feelings. Yes I learned a few things but not as much as I would want to, I think he could have put more effort and content--application is what I was looking for. He was clearly busy with other priorities so he would let us out early or cancel class, but who could blame him? Speeches & grading are straightforward, you get what you put in.

I can't even believe that this is a real class at JMU. Stupidly easy. Lots of presentations. Insanely easy grader. No tests or quizzes. I did not learn a single thing from this class that I didn't already know. Why do I need to take a semester long class on interviewing? Get the A from this class but don't expect to learn anything from it.

no matter the teacher SCOM is really boring but his lectures aren't that bad and can be funny. only 2 tests and a final, 1 essay, 1 big group project, and 1 public speech. not a time consuming class at all. allowed 3 unexcused absences. overall he is a pretty solid teacher

Professor Mayfield is awesome. He is not an easy grader for speeches- he definitely expects you to push yourself. But I learned so much from him and his lectures were always so interesting and helpful. Class always got out early and there were no tests or readings- just speeches. He made me love public speaking. TAKE HIM.

The class subject is terrible. There is no way around that, but Mayfield makes it bearable. Super nice and will work with you if something comes up. Extra credit options and a few easy points. Tests are hard though. He brought us all breakfast one morning and is a really good storyteller. I rarely read my textbook and was fine.

Lee is such a wonderful professor. He is invested in your success and realizes that GCOM is a gen ed and treats it that way. However you still have to put in the effort to do well in the class. If you read the chapters assigned, work well with your group during the group project, and glance over notes for the tests you should be fine.

Overall, Lee is good. All speeches. His grades are hard to find out where they're coming from; since it's a speech it's pretty subjective and up to him. Creates a really fun, laid-back class atmosphere!

I liked this class. Right now, I have a 90.2 but I enjoy going to this class. He was funny, entertaining, and helpful. I've only taken one of his test so far, but it was a little hard. But, I would definitely recommend him!

Great guy, really cares about SCOM and seeing his students do well. Loved the class assignments and learned a lot as an Org. Comm major. He heads the speech team though and he is extremely harsh about speeches and grading. Keep that in mind, but take him you will learn a lot and enjoy the class too.

Mayfield was a good professor overall. His online tests were impossible though! You're not supposed to use your book but obviously everyone does and it doesn't help. The class doesn't help with anything in the comm field, which is why i changed my major. Also, he is a horrible advisor unless you are a SMAD major.

Before this class, I was convinced I wanted to minor in comm. After this class, I definitely do not. The subject matter is boring and vague. Lee is a GREAT professor though, so if for some reason you actually like comm studies, take him. The online tests were great, but if you mess up on one, you only have three other grades to bring it up.

I LOVE LEE!!! He is the best 245 professor they have! He is so willing to help you with anything (course material/advising/general questions). 4 tests, all online (they aren't easy! be aware!) If you take good notes and pay attention, you'll do great! Make sure to read through all of the slides from lecture right before the test!
