I took many classes with her and she cares about students who make an effort. She makes effort to be honest and fair. I am not sure how many of these post approached her, but I never had a bad experience.

Was she even there last semester? Holy cow, one of the most boring and disinterested profs I had ever had! She wandered through her lectures, gave incomprehensible emails and couldn't hold a single line of thought.

Dr. Howsam is one of if not the most knowledgeable professors in the history department; a great resource. She takes her topics seriously, it is her life's work after all. So for the raters that used the words pretentious, arrogant and complained about her using big words. Grow up and get and get a dictionary. Welcome to University

I was so disappointed with this pretentious Prof. I agree with below - if you are not specifically a history major, she will not treat you well or call on you, and will arbitrarily rip your papers apart - I was a straight A International Relations major, and have since become a history teacher myself, but she ignored me and treated me like scum.

A very nice lady but not an interesting professor. Historical Method is a useless class so its hard to blame her. But she does not allow late papers and uses big words which are unnecessary (who uses the word esoteric, honesty?)She specifically chose a book that was more difficult (she told the class)

A truly nice woman; she explains things thoroughly and is open to student comments and suggestions; very fair and efficient marker; very approachable and friendly, if you have the chance, take a class with her!Just make sure you show up on a regular basis, she values student interest/interaction

Good teacher, can be boring at times but is an easy marker as long as you look like you put some effort into the work. She loves her history students and sometimes gives them more of an edge than non-history students.

She's fairly ditsy, but friendly too. Her marking can be harsh! Not the best prof, but certainly not the worst. She really likes to ask questions during class, so make sure you reply and suck up as much as you can.

BEWARE she treats non-history majors horribly, makes mean-spirited and sarcastic comments to them, and refuses to call on them in class. Her classes are boring, and unless you have brought your chapstick and are prepared to permanently fix your lips to her butt alongside the rest of her minions, don't expect much attention or effort from her!

She's intelligent, organized, helpful, and a fast grader. She makes her classes interesting and challenges her students. Elicits opinions from all her students - challenges sophisticated thoughts and helps make sense of raw and seemingly unintelligible ideas. Great professor!
