What a hard marker expects you to read over 1000 pages for the finals and does not clearly gives you on how to prepare yourself for the final which is worth 60% of your grade. I regret taking his class.

Professor Poirier's speeches were interesting and profoundt. But he uses lagging and weird software to post his "class" notes. Says he hates regurgitation but gives A+ to those who do it. 60% of class time spent on off-topic debates. Mixes in one lecture with another 'til you're lost. Neglects other important topics by repeating his favourit ones.

He`s very interesting, another perception, another point of view. His class may bore you but what he says is Worth listening to. Take note of what he says you`ll need it for your exams. You do not need to use the 4 books he`ll ask you to buy, however those are books you need to read at least once in your life so might as well do it then.

Really interesting prof. His lectures are veery interesting if you have the capacity to grasp what he is saying throughout the lectures. only missed a few classes, though my recommendation is to go to class and to take notes. If you listen and write notes to refer to, this class is a breeze and interesting.

This professor is the most confusing I have had. But not only is he confusing, he is also often non-factual. God have mercy on your soul should you not share his point of view.

If you are interested in political philosophy and modernity, this class will engage you. If you are interested in public policy and data crunging, AVOID this class. I learned a lot - Dr. Poirier gets students to think outside of the typical polisci academic box. This is the best class I took in my undergrad.

Lectures are a hard to follow because he's all over the place. Some of what he says is eye opening but most things are irrelevant. In depth content needed on the two midterms and the final.ridiculous marker.

I'm about to enter my fourth year of a poli sci PhD program and still think Poirier's class on the philosophy of science is one of the best courses I've ever taken.

Comment:
Course is a truly in-depth critique of governance and political religions, and their consequences for human beings. Contrary to comments, Prof. doesn't care what one's opinions are, so long as they're thought-out and well founded. Prof. is polite, but will point out when your thoughts are half-baked. Doesn't care about students' religion or gender.

Comment:
This course goes far beyond the dry, poorly explained algebra of the usual stats or methods course. The Prof's way is to address the underpinnings of methodology by teaching the actual philosophers behind it, rather than taking their truth or validity for granted. Essentially, it is a course on the philosophy of science. Tough but rewarding course.

a class designed for intelligent students. must desire to learn and understand. all he asks is that you first understand before you disagree. also, it is very obvious he teaches his opinions but most people don't seem to realize that it's intentional because he is providing a critique of a very influential ideology in political science

Took him for Poli 372 and Poli 206. If you want to be educated, he's the best, for training, you might want to pass ;) He knows his stuff and he teaches you to think, to learn and to question. For exams, you can get along with his interpretations in class with a quick look at the material. Very sweet man who really cares about his students.

Poirier is a good professor, though this class is supposed to be a method course, he does nothing of that sort. He is doing a theory of science class, which is fine if you are not aiming to go to grad school. Just make sure that you do a proper methods class. Nonetheless this class is an eye-opener

I think he chose my mark when we first met, because he refused to give me anything else throughout the year. I am not above recieving a bad mark in school, but I would like a reason for it. He told me he does not give high marks regularly, but gave no other reason for why I could not achieve a decent mark in his class. I felt pigeonholed.

Dr. Poirier is dedicated to inspiring his students, rather than helping them make more money in the "real" world. This makes his classes both useless and extremely important. I took two of his classes, and they didn't help me double my salary, but they did change my perspectives on a lot of things.

Excellent teacher. Really cares that his students understand. I would highly recommend taking him!!! He's simply the best and the only teacher I ever learned anything significant from. A rarity! Those comments about him favoring men are total bs. I'm a woman & I've always been treated fairly by him and so have my friends.
