Comment:
Brauer is definitely not the best lecturer due to a lack of organization and tendency to ramble but his tests aren't as crazy as people say. I found his exam extremely fair. While there were 2-3 multiple choice on little details he mentioned in class, a 90 is totally achievable with some good ol' studying! Good luck and memorize the pathways !!!

He's literally the worst prof at Guelph. I have no idea how he still has a job teaching. I have learned absolutely NOTHING in his lectures and his notes are garbage. AVOID AVOID AVOID

Very poor lecturer... All over the place and rambles. Only reason I go to class is because the slides he posts don't make sense. Avoid if possible.

Comment:
Exams are ridiculous. Tests on the most minute things that aren't even relevant to the course or what he lectures. Contradicts himself, notes are are hard to follow and intentionally leaves as little information as possible when posting slides online so going to class is a must. Only upside to Brauer is his humour and he makes lectures interesting.

Hardest class I've ever taken. Prof doesn't test on any main concepts but the tiniest details that get glossed over in lecture. Prof is misleading on what info is needed to know for tests (i.e. "not needing to know processes" but pretty much needing to know every single side step, enzyme, or cofactor involved). Avoid Manfred.

Comment:
Dr. Brauer's lecture notes are kind of messy, and there's a lot to study for the exams. I found BIOC 4520 to be a bit more difficult that BIOC 3570. He also scheduled deadlines around the same time for both classes, which made it a bit difficult. Otherwise, he is funny and always manages to capture your attention. Put in the work, and you'll be ok.

Tests you on the most ridiculous tiny details that he barely goes over in class. Then wastes time on stuff you are never tested on. Notes are garbage. Doesn't post much online (i.e. grades or even when he gave the midterm back so you better be in class for that). I know its biochem and it is meant to require a lot of memorization but this was crazy

Somewhat rambling and difficult to follow. A tendency to mislead you about what you will be tested on (From slide: "Diabetes is THE disease of the 21st century. sic" & multiple lectures on topic. There was 1 multiple choice question on diabetes on the exam). Very dark humor that left me distracted (jokes about cop killers, suicide, racism, etc).

Had him for the 2nd half of the course. A bit confusing in his lectures, but if you are good at memorizing everything then you will do fine on the exam.

currently have him for metabolic and analytical biochem. He does expect you to understand everything but so does all of my profs in 3rd and 4th year courses. Extremely approachable. People whining about exams didn't study hard enough expecting an easy ride. Most biochem courses expect memorizing enzymes and cofactors... don't take the courses then.

Assignments/paper=easy. Midterms=easy. final= pretty damn hard. Overall loved the class/prof.However,like everyone else, i found the final to be pretty brutal. A little note for everybody taking this course, just b/c the last lecture is just skimming the last like 40 pages, doesnt mean it is not important. It apparently is ridiculously important

Do not take this class unless you enjoy memorizing (know everything) 200 pages of notes and figures or have some unusual passion for biochemistry. The exams were difficult and long. He likes to test you on the small stuff rather than the big picture. Just stay far away from this class ...

Just a disaster. His F2007 final was the worst one I've ever had. His examinations are unreasonably hard and confusing (easy going in lectures and assign though). Make sure your know the material for final from AtoZ. Literally memorize notes(enzyme names, co-factors) and know mechanisms by heart. Overall, knowledgeable but unhelpful;very deceiving

I took analytical biochem with this prof at 8:30am which is normally a bad indication of a class, however I enjoyed every second of his classes, I loved every science joke. His midterms and exams were difficult though, I'd have to say the hardest exam I've ever written, but I still love brauer as a prof.
