Dr. Oakes is FABULOUS! I loved her class & her. She is a phenomenal teacher who is dedicated to her students and extremely knowledgeable. She is also very funny (just an added bonus!). Her class is NOT EASY, but you will learn so much from her and she is more than willing to help! TAKE HER!:)

Oakes is phenomenal. I thought I had somewhat advanced writing skills upon entering college, and was not happy to receive B-s on my first couple papers; however, she did a wonderful job helping me push myself to improve. Intimidatingly intelligent woman with a great heart, an honest desire to help students, and an extremely fun personality.

Very engaging professor - her class is enjoyable and dynamic. She is an excellent teacher - very helpful and hilarious - but this is in no way an easy class. She grades papers somewhat harshly, but in a constructively critical way. You will really learn a lot from her class and from her paper comments.

Dr. Oakes is an awesome professor. I had no interest in the History of the Liberal Arts prior to this course, but she made the course very engaging and--dare I say it--fun. She knows how to use humor, and she is very interested in her students. I would definitely take an English course taught by her.

Absolutely loved her class. She is so enthusiatic about teaching and the subject matter. Loved her humor as well. The meetins I had with her were extremely helpful. She cares about her students and wants them to do well. She cares about her students academically and personally. I recommend that you take her class!

THE BEST TEACHER I'VE HAD SO FAR!!!i love her personality, the way she teaches, and is very helpful whenever you need help on paper assignments. I don't know what the rest of the people are talking about in the previous comments because the lady DOES know what she is talking about especially when it comes to classical education. She rocks!

Took her British Detective Fiction themed ENG-11 - loved it! If you write coherent, sensical essays, then you'll do fine. If you're looking to make a point that is kind of a stretch in your writing, you're better of finding a different essay topic. One of my favorite classes and professor at Furman- and I'm a science major!

I agree, this woman is super thick. I wish she's spend less time networking and MORE on making herself grow intellectually. I took her class because of the hype. Turns out the woman is a fraud. I've had MANY better English profs. English majors beware!

Year of the Humanities my ASS! This woman is a total fake--i'm sure it's only a matter of time before most people figure it out. I have never had a professor who was more self-congratulatory and pompous as this woman. Her condescending manner prevents her from being a good teacher. She needs to get off her high horse.

Not a pushover, but you can do well in this class. She's the best English teacher I've ever had and is always willing to help so ask her if you need anything. If you get a couple C's or C+'s on papers at first, don't worry, I did and ended up with a B+ final grade. Definitely a must have!
