Great teacher, but bad at handling assignments and grading papers (and there are A LOT of papers) in a timely matter.

This course had no test, it was only 2 research papers. He really helps you get better grades if you put in the work. He changed one paper from a C to an A for me.

Fernandez is funny and cares a lot about his subject matter. The workload can be tough, but as long as you're willing to write the assigned essays you'll do fine. He is really passionate about teaching and always available for outside help.

Really great professor, encouraged the students to do their best. He assigned a lot of essays, but there were no tests or quizzes in the class. The weekly papers were also quite open ended, making them more reflections on readings than anything else.

Intense workload; tried to do it all at once the night before and stayed up until 4am doing it on top of a weird due time (9am Saturday). If you skip, he won't accept it. Didn't change dates on blackboard assignments tab so I missed turn in date for the research paper. Also no added info or reminder for research paper. "You're on your own, kid."

He's a tough professor, and the constant essays are expected to be of a very high quality, but the lectures were fantastic and he's the only class I made a point to never even come in late to. Really great and solidified my desire to be a history major.

Would definitely take another class with Dr. Fernandez. He is so knowledgable and so helpful. Be prepared to read and write a lot - but not take a lot of tests. He'll also go over the kind of writing he prefers if needed. His classes will inspire you about American history and he's a really great guy. Take his classes in person, not online.

DO NOT take this class online in 8 week summer format. He seems personable through email but expects WAY to much for an introductory class. His essay tests and labor intensive assignments are not undergraduate friendly.

He's super funny and his lectures keep you interested, especially when he goes on little rants. He's super laid back and was always ready to help me when I needed it. Yeah sometimes the workload can get heavy depending on the class but he's fairly flexible and willing to listen if you have an issue.

I liked Fernandez. I had him for a freshman seminar- The Idea of America. The class was very discussion based and having read the assigned reading was necessary. As long as you participate and read you should be fine. He has high standards but is very willing to help.

The best teacher I have ever had thus far. If you see him outside of class is he is equally as funny and nice and excited to see you. I LOVED going to his Southern History class- he is extremely smart and passionate and actually cares about his students and their lives and interests. He is the teacher I will always remember from college! Brilliant!

I'm a history major because of Dr. Fernandez! I LOVE his classes and recommend that everyone interested in history take at least one class with him. He is extremely smart & helpful and will even look over papers before they're due. His classes are far from easy and they require a lot of writing/reading, but it is definitely possible to make an A.

Very entertaining! Assigns a lot of work, don't expect an easy A in any of his classes, or even an easy B. It's not happening. But he is helpful, funny, and one cool dude overall. Fernandez knows his stuff.

He is the worst teacher. I met with him a bunch outside of class and all he had to say was negative things towards me. He is not worthy of being a teacher. He also thinks he is the only teacher. WAY TO MANY PAPERS! atleast one a week..sometimes three (6 pages each). I would never take him again. DONT take him!
