he is hilarious, i've taken 2 classes with him and plan to take more. 2 exams and one essay for the semester BUT the essay(for me)usually takes a month or more to research and write, which i love, because you learn more and the research is fun (as well as stressful) BUT he is super helpful and you can hand in many drafts he does his best to help

Mark Lawall is the man!! His lectures are fantastic, he is very knowledgeable, and he has a great sense of humour. Exams are pretty manageable. Gives good feedback on the research paper. He is pretty good at remembering the names of his students as well.

Comment:

Professor Lawall is very caring and helpful. He is accessible outside of class time and always willing to help if you have questions. His tests are almost the same as his wife Lea Stirling's CLAS 2680 but slightly easier. I didn't use the textbook. Go to class and take notes and you will do well. Definitely a fun course and great professor.

Truly a great prof. A lot of material covered on the tests, but graded fairly. Did not read the textbook cover to cover, but used it to supplement certain topics discussed in class.

Funny man, that's for sure. However, beyond his humor I found the class to be very challenging as there are a considerable amount of details and information required to know for the weekly quizzes. If you skip class, you are essentially screwed because his notes on D2L are only points, not information. Overall, nice professor but not helpful at all

My favourite prof that i've had. He is so goofy in the best way possible. He keeps the course material as simple as it can be while still giving you the info you need to know. Also has great anecdotes. He is a slightly harder marker, but still very fair. I would take any class he was teaching even if i had no interest in the subject. What a guy!

Mark Lawall was a fantastic professor. His lectures were funny and easy to listen to which made everything easier to understand. The notes he posts online aren't that helpful so you need to be in class taking notes. Lots of mini quizzes but they help in the long run as they will be relevant for the exams. I would take his class again for sure.

Comment:

Dr Lawall is by far one of the best professors I have had at the U of M. The material is kind of boring but he makes it interesting and easy to remember. Has lots of test throughout the semester but gives enough info in lectures to do well on them, plus his lectures are always entertaining. I would for sure recommend anyone take this course!

Very funny. Material is hard to understand. Is obsessed with pottery. Tests are difficult; tested on seemingly random material, and memorization of dates, materials, names, etc. are mandatory. Lectures are boring; only discusses buildings and pottery. Prof is great though - he is very helpful, nice, and provides answers that actually help you.

Comment:

Lawall is a great professor. His lecture style is engaging and pretty hilarious. He explains things well and learns the names of many of his students. His quizzes are not extremely easy but he tends to be pretty nice about partial credit. He is not particularly harsh on writing assignments either and will explain how you lost marks.

By far my favourite prof that I've had at U of M!!! His lectures were entertaining and he was a fair marker, and had good sense of humour to boot. Would definitely recommend taking his class, it is interesting as an elective even if you aren't pursuing a career in classics.

FANTASTIC professor! A great marker, and very educational. Funny and makes going to class actually enjoyable. The material can sometimes be challenging, but he's very good at explaining the topic so that everyone can understand it. I definitely recommend him to anyone taking Classics.
