I'm honestly surprised by all the poor reviews on here. Prof Davis basically will hand you an A if you show some semblance of effort, and I thought she was very understanding. The spy tales material is so much more interesting than what my friends read for their freshman seminars. I definitely recommend this class, it's been one of my favorites!

I took Spy Tales. She definitely knew what she was talking about, but she was boring and if you got on her bad side it was notttt fun. As long as you do the papers relatively well you'll get an A. Solid amount of reading/writing, but it is a freshman seminar. She's not very clear about things, but happy to answer questions -- I emailed her a lot.

I took Mrs. Davis' freshman writing seminar in 1982. Yes, I'm old! She was the only professor at W&M who took a personal interest in me, and I regret not being more responsive to her. She encouraged me as a writer, and also taught me how to encourage others without destroying their work. She made me a better person and a better writer.

Seems like a kind person, but is not a coherent, effective professor. She is incredibly unclear about guidelines or expectations for papers, and does not seem to tolerate any way to write papers other than her way. She rambles and does not stimulate intellectually. Overall a disappointing experience, especially for one who loves real literature

She is very cruel and disrespectful towards her students. She uses a cynical tone of voice and her expectations are nearly impossible to reach even if you go to her for help. Honestly, I would not recommend anybody to take this class. She definitely does not give out A's.

She is a great person, but not a great professor. She is very boring and rambles when you ask a question, so it's nearly impossible to get a real answer. However, she's very sweet and very smart. Take this for an easy A, but not if you want to be challenged or really learn anything.

She is very nice, and VERY genuinely interested in her topic, and well-read in it, but she is old, and often she goes off on ramblings that will probably not ever get around to answering the question you asked. This inaccesability renders the class unenjoyable. Take a different prof if you want to learn. If you want an easy A, go with her.

Took Tales of Travel with her. She's an angel brimming with quiet enthusiasm. Her passion for the subject and knowledge of authors is awing. Kind grader. Sometimes slightly unclear but such a lovable person it doesn't matter. Always going out of her way to help students, esp. international ones. Assigns great books.I wish she taught more courses!

Absolutely boring. Most unorganized prof ever, you never know when papers are due or what to read for class. Read the books or be really good at b.s. cause she'll turn on you in a second. She seems to really like her subject but rambles forever and speaks and a really quiet monotone. Unless you really like travel lit, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!

Her class is unabashedly boring and when she speaks, she does it in a soft, monotone voice and very often strays off without any sort of point. She is very unclear with how and when she wants things done, is known to change the plans at the very last minute, and seems to remember doing/giving out things which she has never done. Really sweet woman, ready to help you with anything and really makes an effort to know everyone individually. The readings are not always exciting, but they serve a purpose. If you're not interested in the topic, then don't take it! Otherwise, she's a fair grader and a great person to get to know.

Fresh Sem- very boring. Extremely unclear as to when papers are due, what projects are required. Nice lady, but very disorganized and takes FOREVER to explain anything. Gets sidetracked a lot and forgets to get to the point. Not recommended.

Comes of as this cute nice little old lady, but watch out..more than one person has been known to burst into tears after her little "chats". She is disorganized in her lesson plans, unclear in what she wants in the class, and really doesn't seem to like white people. Personally, I'm sending out a letter to the dean to get her fired.

She's extremely nice, patient and helpful. She's so personable that she actually makes an effort to befriend her students. Comparatively, you may not learn the most from her but you will get a professor who actually wants to get to know you. We need more people like her around.
