She's rigid and confusing. I didn't learn anything in her class and it was a waste of my time and money. It is really too bad because I was looking forward to her class. She may be an accomplished poet but she is a terrible teacher.

Mary is a fossil incapable of connecting with her students. Her feedback is useless. In workshops she is dismissive of any comments that do not correlate with her own readings of students' work. She doesn't listen to what anyone has to say and she doesn't understand half of what people mean. Her class is boring, too. Expects a lot, gives little.

Not helpful at all. Very close-minded, concerned with the technical rather than the artistic. Extremely discouraging, barely gives any constructive criticism. Fellow students were way more helpful than she was. Would not recommend.

She had no idea how to facilitate a creative writing workshop. She constantly interrupted students. She often didn't seem to know the material she was teaching. Her comments on my work were useless observations instead of pertinent constructive criticism.

Just say no. Incomprehensible and uncomprehending - she never understood anyones poetry - and watch out if you disagree with any of her 'this is how it is' comments. Her course is relatively easy, especially if she likes you, but you're pretty much guaranteed to learn absolutely nothing, and you'll suffer in the process. What a horrible waste.

biggest waste of my time. didn't learn one thing all year. improvements in my writing weren't recognized. she doesn't "get" anything. her critiques are like book reports. (ex: "this poem is about a girl who is sad. she is blahblah and does blahblah. at the end blah happens.") she misinterpreted most poems and interrupted students frequently. AVOID.

I took what was supposed to be an introductory class to creative writing, and the only possible way to get an A was to write a publishable story. Does very little in the way of teaching, is a hard marker, and her jittery personality will annoy beyond belief. Avoid at all costs.

Pros: She is very understanding and helpful. If you do the work, you'll get a good grade. This class is really helpful if you want to be a writer.Cons: You'll find that she goes on tangents. She can be a little boring.

Timid but really nice if you get to know her beyond the classroom facade. Expects a lot out of beginning students but will help and will reward progress. Class is boring though and she takes attendance. Also, students must keep a journal all semester (writing at least 3x/week).

Terrible, couldn't teach if her life depended on it; slightly shifty and easily unnerved. Very light on acedemics and thus insecure and defensive. Don't go in for anything but touchy-feely attempts to get you to write about mother-daughter relationships.
