Super insightful teacher who cares more about his students doing well than their actual letter grade. Very interesting classroom discussion topics and activities, and also a fairly hard grader-- however, it is not impossible to produce A papers. The better he knows you, the better he grades you. DOn't need the book if you can print the content.

He assigns a lot of assignments, but you'll never improve as a writer unless you practice. This class is meant for people who LOVE writing/reading. He WILL read your work to the class but don't fret, he creates a comfortable environment for these critiques. You will grow as a writer in this class. The books are not super necessary but they help.

Hettich is very nice and approachable in and outside of the class. He grades very harshly. You will hate your grades because it is not an A or a B, it will be like an A-/B+. No one likes this kind of grading, it makes you feel very insecure. He is not very open to other ideas in class discussions. Very awkward professor at first!

Life changing teacher. Had him for 4 classes. Loving, sincere, humble. EXTREMELY knowledgeable about writing. Good, thorough feedback. Cares about your progress. Expects a lot from you. The class ends up feeling like family. He's kind, witty, and gracious. Awkward at first, but a funny troll when you get to know him. TAKE HIM. Make him like you.

The assignments are awesome and he teaches it well. However he is a little hard to listen to after a while, his lectures are long and I lose interest fast. He does a critique of your work sometimes in front of the whole class and sometimes won't ask you. Then the class bashes your work to the point where you don't want to write for him again

Mr. Hettich is an absolutely amazing teacher. I was damn lucky to get him as a professor. He's inspirational, considerate, highly-knowledgeable, and--and everything I want in a teacher. I'll definitely be paying his office visits even after the class has ended, so I can get more help. I hope I come across teachers like him in other subjects.

This class is easy if you participate and show up. He really cares about that! He assigns a lot of poems and stories you have to make up. He grades you on effort more than quality, but you obviously need to care

Amazing professor. Definitely one of the best professors at Dade. He really knows what he's doing and is extremely helpful. Highly recommend going to his office hours. Take him if you're serious about writing; you will learn SO much. You have to put in the effort. Don't turn in a sloppy poem or short story. Avoid skipping--participation matters.

He is a very tough grader and wants all his students to write perfect essays like a professional. He compares the essays of English majors to those who are not English majors to highlight how superior they are. I don't mind writing essays but the way he grades them discouraged me because it is almost impossible to get an A.

I hated writing essays and I still kindof do but this professor is the BEST. He helps out all of his students, encourages to visit him during his office hours, and if he sees that you're trying, he'll help you out with your grades. Writing the research paper is worth a big chunk of your grade, but he makes it easier for students. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Really nice guy. He is always available during his office hours. If he sees that you are really trying in his class, he helps you out but keep in mind that this is a two part deal. If he sees that you don't care, he won't either. Very intelligent and teaches well. Highly recommended.

Dr Hettich is a remarkable professor and one of the best @ MDC. It was a privilege to take his class. His course load his not demanding at all and most of your grades are based on essays he gives in class. Rent the textbook he asks you to get, don't buy. Begin your research paper early, 30% of your grade depends on it!
